Hi all,
my brother has a 1997 brava td 100 elx with 98000 miles.
I have a marea td elx, so its the same engine as his
About a week ago he was driving it and it stalled and would not start. The code light, the glow plug light and the injector light did not come on.
I checked it over and found the main fuse for the ignition (i think it was 40 amp) had blown. Also the injector fuse held behind the glove box had blew also. After replacing these, the code light came on and went off but no injector or glow plug light.

So he left the car into a local garage who could not fix it, but fitted an override switch to manually put on the glow plugs and if you push this switch for 10 seconds and then turn it over, the engine starts.bloody amateurs!!!!
But its running like a tractor!!

I have checked the ecu and one of the tracks on the circutboard has burnt out

I have a couple of questions, will it harm the car running like that? i suspect the whole engine management system is down.

Also as ive said ,i know the ecu is out and thats why the car is in the state its in.Does anyone have any ideas, and is there any reasons for the ecu blowing? Putting in another ecu might just blow it too, i suspect something has shorted it out but what ???

its a really lovely car and i talked him into buying it,so id like to help sort it for him

Hi and welcome. :)

It sounds like you have a short somewhere. You need to find that before replacing the ecu. I wouldn't advise driving without the ecu, as you say it will drive like a tractor.

An ecu replacement at a garage is not that economic but can be done by you if you want to give it a shot.

:)
thanks dave,
yes i hope to get a second hand e.c.u, but its finding the short!

i guess its one of the sensors that feeds the e.c.u that has went down? do you know if you can get a pinout schematic diagram for the lucas e.c.u? i know what pin leads to the burnt out track of the board.

i guess the short might have originated in the e.c.u, but think this would be highly unlikely?

he was turniing left at the time the car stalled, i was thinking there might have been a short in the steering column somewhere as he was holding the indicator stalk down as he was turning due to the steering wheel not being centered properly?

cheers
andrew
