I have an Weekend 1.8 ELX 99' and I have a problem when the car is on IDLE. Even that now is cold, the car starts very good in the morning and works properly, but as soon as the engine gets worm, when you leave the car on IDLE (e.g. stop at the traffic light) the engine doesn't keep it 1000rpm at constant. It looks like the engine wants to turn off and than it get more power again. I am trying to find the right word to describe it, but the idea is that the engine keeps oscilating from 500-1500 rpm. When you press the gas pedal it works properly even thought it doesn't look to have the normal acceleration power. I have also notice that it comes a bad smell from the back, when making this thing (can be that it doesn't burn the fuel). This problem does not happen every time, but is happening more often every day.
This morning, when I started the car, I also got the red ignition light on. I restarted the car and it dissapered. After the manual this is "normal".

I am thinking that must be some problem with some spark and want to change them (they have been working for 30.000 and after the service book are supposed to be changed after 10.000 Km). Could it be the solution?
Does anybody have any idea about this problem?

Hi and welcome to our forum :)
There are a few reasons why your car may be hunting. If you have badly worn plugs that could cause it. When was the last time the car was serviced?
If the plugs are ok you may have dirty injectors.
Then it may be worth getting a diagnostic.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Dave and thank you for the reply.
This weekend was bad wether here in Sweden so that I couldn't change the sparks, but I put some injector cleaners on the fuel instead. The car seems to work better, even thought I have just driven 40-50 km with the cleaner. The car was last serviced 8.000 km before (oil and filters) while the sparks have been working for about 30.000 km. After the service book they are suposed to be changed every 40.000 km, but can be that one of the sparks is faulty. I hade a look at the engine, and it looks relatively easy to change the sparks, of course with the proper key so that I'm planing to change them ASAP. Any think I should be ware of?
Any sugestion for the sparks? They have two kind of sparks that fit on my car in the shop nearby, Beru Ultra-X and NGK? Any idea which one is better?

Never heard of Beru Ultra-X before but NGK are ok.
I fitted some Iridium plugs to mine and they cured a misfire until I could get a faulty coil pack changed.
Single electrode plugs tend to start wearing after about 10k, twin electrode plugs last longer as both electrodes don't fire at the same time. Iridium plugs are harder and so last longer, they also fire at a lower voltage as they are so thin and so extend the life of your ignition system.
