Just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on what the "problem" I outline below might be

When we start the car there is a pretty noisy consistent rattle coming from the area around the cambelt (car has done 80K and cambelt replaced at 70K) The rattle seems to subside as we move off althoufgh the car seems noisier than it has ever been. We've had this car for years so we are used to the normal diesel sounds!

We do seem to be getting a bit more smoke on start up than we used to but very little when in transit.

The red injection light on the dash has been coming on intermittently for a while but we dont appear to have had any issues with the engine operation despite the light so we have ignored it. Its deffo not on permanently or anything like that, indeed if we run round town it never comes on.

I've got a bad feeling!!!

Just to clarify

The car is very noisy on tickover but sounds far better when moving.

The injector warning light comes on intermittently. If I push the car the light is on then if I back off a bit it extinguishes.

I have tried a bit of a injector cleaner additive (after reading advice in the forum about jets being blocked) and now and again the engine starts running silently before returning to noisy running.

Are the diesels always prone to getting jets clogged up?

it might be the oil pump chain rattling, which is at the bottom of the pulley wheels.mine was like that but got a new pump fitted at a garage (not fiat garage). £700 quid(n) double at fiat.you can hear the noise while ticking over until you get to about 1000 revs.

Thanks for that

I cannot even contemplate paying £700 for a car thats maybe worth a grand

Funny thing is that since deploying the additive the engine is running great but the noise persists almost all the time with the odd silent moment.

Did you get any silent moments with the chain problem?

I took the car into a Bosch diagnostic centre yesterday but the diagnostic equipment kept crashing! Bloody FIATS!

I didn't think it would be that much, as the garage said it would take about 6 or 7 hours, it ended up being a 17 hour job.(BIG JOB ).:(

The noise was a crank shaft pulley. (£140 ish to cure.) Job done At a main dealer, Stoneacre of Hyde in Cheshire)

Now running as sweet as a nut. My wife will have to wait for the 3 series estate!
