I've been reading that many people do not recommend using the normal CV joint grease for the inner CV joints using tripod bearings.

The reason being the small rollers in the tripod that require a thinner, more liquid grease than the outer CV joints.

It is recommended instead that one use "NLGI-GC synthetic greases based on polyurea or calcium sulphpnate thickener that is free of moly," or "polyurea" greases with a NGLI grade 1.

Does anybody here know if the Rocol "Sapphire 1" grease (NLGI 1, part no. 12601) fits the bill?

Other specific names mentioned were the GKN Tripod Joint Grease, MC-SHRUS, and John Deere Polyurea Grease, but the first is very expensive, and the two others need to be posted from outside the UK. I've decided to post here what I've found, as it may help some of you guys if in the future you need to repack the inner cv joint...

Rover Group used to supply the correct goo in small sachets, one for each joint, but sadly disappeared with the company. I can't find any equivalent in small quantities.

The GKN Tripod grease is the one to use. There's a clue in the name really. Made by the company that makes the joints, specifically for those joints. The expense is probably worth it. If ever I need some, it is what I'll get.

Sadly, most inner joint boot kits contain the same grease as for the outer joints, which is not good.
