Hi, I have just had the Weekend 2.4TD serviced and now it seems to lose power when driving. Pulls away at junctions OK but loses all power going up a hill or when it's been driving at low speed for a while it won't pick up again to regain speed.
Changed at service: fuel filter, oil filter, oil.
Air filter and MAF were changed about 10000 miles ago.
It used to belch out plumes of black smoke which has stopped since service.

Any suggestions? will this fix itself?

EGR stuck/clogged? Could be the airquantity meter (mechanical linkage) being dirty, but I'd check and clean EGR first as it affects the flow and is most likely to be full of crap.
It should be in top of the exhaust manifold with tube going to the intake.

Hi, what age is it,?
if it's OBD2 , then getting it plugged into MES / or similar could save some head scratching,
my 2001 1905 JTD flags up EGR comms errors. without me ever noticing a warning light on dash:eek:

2.4TD has just mechanical flow volume flap like in the older engines. JTD has mass airflow sensor.

Black smoke = overfueling
Pretty much the major limiting done to the injected fuel amount is the air quantity sensor, which in turn is affected by the egr as there is path between exhaust and intake after the meter, which might not be what the ECU expects it to be.

Could be the control side, but as it otherwise works, I doubt it.

I've seen fuel pressure regulator go bad inside the pump on JTD, but TD shouldn't have issues as it is much simpler and seems to be responding other than high power acceleration (JTD just died as pressure was out of control).

Might be the fuel filter if it is bad but then it should suffer on hard takeoff aswell. On low power driving the EGR is actuated to reduce NOx so that is why it is my suspected issue. Black smoke through the EGR does not help keep it clean.

Later 2.4TD engines are fitted with a MAF sensor. Exactly the same layout as on the JTD.

If the problem was present on collection after service then presumably it must be related to something that the garage has done. Perhaps stretching the point a bit but have they managed to fit the wrong fuel filter? Is it somehow restricting fuel flow? Hence, no more black smoke, no power going uphill etc.
No idea what the difference is but Mann lists different part numbers for early and late 2.4 TD engines.

When the MAF on our JTD130 went the car wasn't too bad at low revs but when you wanted any go forward there was simply nothing there. Replaced with a genuine Bosch item and no issues since.

Haven't tried it myself but there have been posts from people who have had some success cleaning up the MAF sensor element with carb cleaner or some other solvent.

Always in this case, cleaning the MAF sensor simply ,cleaning air throttle, checking ignition leads which is effective and finally replacing sparkle plugs if long time unchanged
