hi,when i start my 2.4td 1998,it sometimes revs hi ie 1200rpm.injector warning lights comes on occasionally.previously had glow plug regulator replaced for same prob.also,is it normal to have black smoke when revving hi?ie when turbo kicks in.it cost me a packet to get regulator rewplaced in garage so id like to know if anyone can tell me where on engine glow-plug regulator is situated.
thanx in advance

The glow plugs are really only there to aid with cold starting. If you're getting erratic idle and black smoke under acceleration you should be looking elsewhere. Black smoke is caused through excessive fueling and or advanced fuel pump timing. I could give you a whole list of sensors to check however the best way is to plug an engine fault code reader onto it to find out which one has a problem.

thnx for the reply pilot.black smoke is only when i floor the accelerator.had same prob with revs before and fiat had it on computer (it cost me an arm and a leg).they changed glow regulator and cured it for a while.would like to try fitting one myself but not sure where its located, any idea`s?

How much black smoke are we talking about? Under acceleration you will get some black smoke, more so on older cars due to wear in the pump & injectors and also the earlier emmission requirements. Are we talking about MoT failure here? It's quite normal for a cold engine that has been pottering around town for a few minutes to chuck out some black smoke the first time it is opened up fully too. How many miles are on the engine now?

A very quick check worth doing is making sure the air cleaner is not restricted. There are a few 'tricks' for reducing smoke too like blocking off the pipe to the EGR valve so that you're not sucking exhaust fumes back through the engine.

As for your regulator, sorry I don't know where it is. I'd try following the glow plug wires back but they will probably go straight to a relay.
