RPM on FIAT MAREA 2.4TD 125HLX 1997

For the past 18 months, I have noticed that the engine sounds very noisy on start up and when it's stationary.
FIAT told me last year that the timing belt tensioner needed replacing, I had this changed by some other garage, but it has not made any difference.
2 years ago I had the crank pulley replaced and recently the alternator tensioner replaced.
The engine does seem a lot quieter, when the water temperature of the car goes up i.e. whilst stuck in traffic.
I believe that the revs on the car are too low. Does the Marea have an idler where you can adjust it manually to increase the revs?

There is an idle control solenoid on the throttle body but it is a factory adjustment.
If you want to adjust idle speed you need a diesel rev counter. Let the engine warm up and make sure that nothing is switched on or running, lights, fan, etc.
Slacken the lock nut on the long screw on the injection pump and adjust to 850 RPM.

Out of curiosity, what idle speed is it showing on the dash?

Regarding engine noise when cold, this is normal for diesels that pre date the common rail engine (JTD's). They got clever with the JTD's and introduced pre injection do reduce idle and low RPM noise. You can't do this with a rotary pump.

I'd say it's about 700-750RPMs

Thanks for your response Dave, can any garage carry out this adjustment?

Dave,

Are you getting this data for a 'mechanical' fuel pump or an 'electronically controlled' fuel pump. The reason I ask is that it is normal for the ECM to control the idle speed for electronically controlled fuel pumps. I would have expected the TD125 to run a Bosch VP37.

I'm guessing you're getting this data from a workshop manual so it should be right, it just isn't what I expected!

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
I take your point, I was referring primarily to the manual pump.
There is not much you can do to an electronic pump apart from checking the wiring if the input signals are wrong (3.5 to 3.9v). I think that you can still alter the idle speed by adjusting the control lever stop if the speed is low. You can also twist the potentiometer but that is a bit messy without measuring gear.
Apologies if I have given incorrect information. I don't have a manual for the 2.4JTD.
