Hello, I have just become the (hopefully) proud owner of a Marea Weekend, for reasons that include destruction of wild boar on the Autobahn. It's a 97, with supposedly low mileage (130,000 K), and lack of maintenance as far as i can see.

Whats really bothering me is the extremely high (in my opinion) Petrol comsumption. At best, I'm getting about 28 mpg.

All my other cars, Ford Focus Turnier, and Toyota Corolla, gave me about 40 mpg.

I know I have to change the plugs and air filter, and new tyres may help. I also think the clutch is on its way out. But is 28mpg normal? I'm going broke just driving to work!

Having the same issue on my saloon at the moment, i expect the Weekend to be higher but not by much!

Recently car hasn't been running too great and last night said it all when the injector light decided to pop up and inform me its on its way out (Explains the small missfire, can you hear it too?),

Ima replace the whole rail i think (Y) should sort that problem out.

I'd give your MAP and IAC sensor a clean though buddy, the 1.6 relies on them alot!

Thanks for the reply, and advice. Unfortunately I dont hear much of anything right now except the missing exhaust gasket, which will hopefully be fixed tomorrow.

I haven't looked yet, but are there any 'how to's' on the MAP and IAC in the forums?

And if not, where could I go? My apologies, I'm new to all this, I used to do my own cars years ago, but I've been an Office Wallah for many many moons now.

What sort of consumption are you getting? (Or were, before the problems started)

And one last thing, when you say rail, you mean the whole injector rail?

Thanks for the help.

1.6 16v Really? Thats way too much, nothing like what I'm used to. I thought I had a hole in the petrol tank. Looks like it may have to go if I can't get that down. I drive 65 miles everyday just to get to work and back.

Well saloon is rated at 5.5l to 100km in the book iirc or 5.7l which is about 40-50 mpg (And i know it can do this) because motorways apserlutely see loads of fuel! (And using like a notch and a half going like 150 miles to blackpool)

Weekend has more weight though so maybe i'd say its about 6.2/100km,

Yeah they say replace all injectors, so that another one doesnt decide to fail hah another issue is how annoyingly placed the fuel rail is!

I will make a video for you tommorow on quick cleaning operation of the MAP and IAC, you will want:

Cotton Buds.
Halfords Carb Cleaner.
Torx Screwdrivers!
Small Pry Tool Of Some Sort!
Big Spanner (i think over 12mm+ i cant remember sorry :<)

Well, I'm getting about 10l to 100km....which is way too much for my purse....it would be great to have some vids, thanks.
I know I have to replace the plugs and air filter first thing. From what I understand, the injectors cost an arm and a leg...I don't know if it would be worth it.
I'm looking into converting to LPG, (quite common now here in Germany), but it will depend on the general condition of the whole vehicle as to whether its worth the investment. Thanks a lot for the help.
I do like the car, but i have a family to feed as well!

So i made the vid, except its in loads of parts so i need to assemble them all first, coming soon!

Thank you very much! I've been out of the loop for a couple of days (work). I've had the timing belt, plugs and air filter done, so i have to see if that makes a difference. i'm also noticing lousy acceleration, i know it's not a rocket, but most of my other cars were 1.6s, and seemed to take off much better....maybe a good clean up will help. I look forward to the vids!

Ok sorry about this, alot has happening in two weeks and i can't believe i've had apserlutely no time to post any help,

I will just screen cap the videos as the size is just too stupidly large which makes me very sad!

Its really very simple, and our Mareas are very easy to work with!

Thank you for your patience :)

Do you have windows movie maker? It can drop your video sizes down to something sensible.

High fuel consumption can be the cause of a defective thermostat. How is your temperature? If pretty low, change the thermostat and you directly will notice less fuel consumption :)
