Hi Fiat members,
I recently changed my cambelt and full kit on my Marea 1.6 16 v w reg and was confused by the belt tensioner. apparently you adjust the tensioner till the indication arrow on the tensioner is aligned with the dot, I tried this but the belt seemed to be extremely tight and the arrow had not moved from it's original position so I took advice from a member and set the tension at 5mm play in belt which seemed reasonable but now I am getting a whistling noise at 3000 revs.
Could it be the belt needs to be tighter or have I been sold a faulty bearing? Any advise would be appreciated as the whistling is driving me mad  Thanks in advance.

Hi,
not too sure..,
5mm seems about right.. , but were you saying there may be some suspicion of the auto tensioners function??,
you normally wind it round to the marks align ( stiff), then it does the rest as the belt runs,

have you run it without the ancilliary belt..??,
just to eliminate other issues,
Charlie

Seems a little dangerous to me to just set the belt up for 5mm free play when the automatic tensioner has not been set up correctly. Fiat do know a bit about their engines and if they say set it up one way why would you do anything different, unless you really really know what you are doing.
I would suggest you go back and do it by the book, hopefully before the belt jumps and your engine eats itself.
