The reason i ask is that i have to sell mine to get something a little more slower and getting more MPG, as i have had to start using my car more often than just the weekends, my car is a 98 on 83k with cambelt done by poweritalia, and a new rad in december last year. i love it but its just costing me way too much too run at the moment, and whatevr i get for it i need to use that same amount to buy a smaller engined car or diesel, just need a rough ball park as i am going to put it on ebay shortly.

Cheers

In the Irish market I reckon about €500 if it has a current NCT (MOT).
The Estates are always worth more than the saloons because they're more versatile.
On the 1.6 that I have I would get around 30mpg if I'm not stuck in too much traffic and would get around 40mpg on a run.
The 20V is supposed to me a horse of any engine. Would you get 25mpg ?
If you are looking to change and 'a smaller car suiits the bill' the 100HP is a nice motor.

Sorry to say, but around £500. There's one on autotrader now. I suppose you need to compare and see if you have anything that people would see as a premium (cambelt just done etc).

No 130 HLXs I see.. I'd love another hen's teeth. 5 pot diesel is beautiful.

Ah, I was about to start a thread about Marea values, but sticking with this seems appropriate (Please feel free to disagree!) The reason for my interest is the difficulty I have had obtaining a value for my, just written off, Marea. I've looked at various valuation sites (Parkers, What Car and some 'sell my car' thing) There's such a massive difference, which is highlighted by an article in the "motor trade insider", that I don't know what to accept as a reasonable offer from the insurance co. I have/had a 125 td weekend, '98 model, with 40,000 miles (sob!) just passed it's mot, with great bodywork, absolutely no rust, full service history etc. If I was able to buy it again I'd happily pay £1500 (Book value April 2010 was £1995 which is what I paid) Am I being realistic? Does lack of availability make it more valuable? Am I asking too many questions?! Am seriously considering buying it back and fixing it! Love that 5 cylinder engine.

I'd say stick to your guns.

I'd say given how many there are to get one would require you to buy pretty much the next one that comes up for sale. Then you'll need to spend money bringing it upto the same level of maintenance (clutch replacement etc). So use all this to improve your offer.

The worth of a car is a funny thing. I Picked up a reasonable condtion 97 20v for my mum a few years back for 400 notes. been keeping an eye on them recently for a small project and all these years later only ones i can find one close to that are scrap. :(

Yeah see thats the thing my car is a turn key car, its been looked after (mopped by mean) and waxed, i have taken some of the dodgy underseal off ans used anti rust primer (2 coats) and some new underseal just to keep it from having any issues, i put a new battery on in april, it has full leather, its alarmed, i have all the receipts but no service book, i have all teh mot's (i think) and it went through last year with no advisories only done 1500 miles since the last mot (it failed first on rear brake pads which Rog at Poweritalia did me) its had the cambelt done by rog at power italia, all the electrics work fine, but has no rear wiper (didn't work when i got it so took it off for a cleaned look).

don't get me wrong is has a few dents and scrapes and the front wing is a slightly different shade and the airbag light is on (same as my last 2 lol) but its 13 years old and has 83k on the clock, i have lowered it using jamex but can put it back to factory, it has a vr6 front splitter but i can take that off.

But if it did more that 35mpg then i would be keeping it, i was hoping to get around £550 for it does this sound relistic?

cheers

Hi Robin.

This is an example of one in Ireland. It has 'your' mileage but the NCT (MOT) has just run out. As mentioned before the Estates are generally more in demand than saloons (I've a brother in the trade). On the mpg quoted for the 20V petrol over the 16V the difference is only 5mpg (I don't know how that translates in real world driving). It really comes down to the mileage that you do in the year. For me to get a cambelt done would cost be between €450-€500. In my case I kept my 'old' Marea and you it for the 'hauling stuff around in' and bought another 'small' car.

Thanks Chaps, i must say i would love to keep it but i also runa 1.6 picasso as a second daily (and family car which my wife uses most of the time) and this is my problem, i am the sole breadwinner in my house and i am running 2 cars which cost me in excess of £500 a month incl insurnace, petrol tax etc etc, if i could get this down to £400 a month then that would be a saving of £1200 a year which would be really nice and also help me out no end, if i were to buy another small car as a daily then i would have teh running costs of that one too, which i just cannot afford, the idea was to get a mk2 punto hlx 1.2 16v or jtd as i can pick a half decent one up for around £800 now and teh running costs on the are minimal compared to my beast, but in all honesty i really do not want to sell it:(

Running costs are important. I run the Marea as a hacker and I changed the over the top 323i coupe to a nippy 500 1.4 so the average mpg went from 25mpg to 37mpg plus cheaper insurance and more importantly the road tax dropped from €935 to €302. I did look at buying a diesel but unless you're doing a lot of miles a year it's not worth it. The OH runs a Mito diesel but she spends half her time on the road clocking up in excess of 25K a year. The 1.2 engine is very economical in the Panda & the 500 but I don't know much about the 1.2 16V in the Punto but it sounds like a good choice with the revability of the 16V and the economy of the 1.2 'block'.

I had a Punto 1.2 16v 6 speed mk2 sporting from new in 2001 and sold it in 2005 due to the arrival of our first daughter, and that was amazing on fuel i use to only put £30 in every 6 weeks and that done me for what i needed, and it never let me down or went wrong, but i really do need to sell my beast and get something cheaper to run

With the price of petrol now - for me it's €6.70 a gallon and I reckon it's around the same in the UK when you do the Euro Sterling conversion - everyone is downsizing to a smaller car. Even the boys in the M3s and the Evos are going for the A500 whilst ordinary folk are getting into smaller engined cars. You can still have a bit of fun in the smaller cars and some are improvising with roof racks, racks on the hatch, towbars for bike carriers, etc. I often wondered why that Punto engine wasn't put in the 500 or even the Panda. I sometimes use the 500 as a little van but thankfully managed to clean up a 5 litre tub of polybond that I spilt in the back hatch. The Marea has served me well and hopefully will keep going a while longer.
