Greetings all!

Recently I bought a 1998 Fiat Marea Weekend 1.9td , and it keeps challenging me.

First I had a problem with the Injection system /fuel pump (I don't know the English techical word, the French call it Injector and in Hungary it's like Fuel Pump. Kinda confusing. Shown on picture.) It exhausted so much of the white smoke, that I had serious troubles seeing anything behind me at closed parking garages.

Anyway, after changing the plastic cover of the pump for a handmade new one, and buying a new part for it, it had less of the smoke. Fiat service here said that they did what they could, but they cannot reprogram the injection system. I used the car for 3.000 km's without serious trobles, only a little white smoke, usually after two hours of driving. Anyway, Fiat sent me to BOSCH, the company who bought LUCAS, the original supplier for the reprogramming. BOSCH said they cannot do it, it's FIAT who should do it. :bang: Nonetheless, they did some measuring, fixed a couple of small things, and genereally found nothing relevant about the problem.

After their service, the real fun began. It was now producing black smoke instead (when accelerating), and after 100km it began to make a funny whirling noise whenever I pressed the gas pedal, and some strange plastic-y smell, which was not fuel, so I did not worry too much. Then rapidly, the power of the engine started to disappear. In flat terrain, I could still reach 130km/h without problems, but climbing began to be more and more difficult. At the end, I had to swich back to 2nd gear on a highway when confronted by a 7-8% hill. So I decied to stop.

When I stopped, I found that the plastic cover of the engine was frankly molten at the right upper part. After removing the cover I found that the engine is covered with carbon black powder, and two cables were seriously damaged (shown in the picture).

I'm not used to neither turbo, nor diesel engines, nor western cars in general, so I'm clueless. I got a guess that the turbo is behind the recent failure, could it be true? If so, is it possible to fix it by myself, or I need a professional?

The most damaged cable is between stuff #1 and #2, and the second most damaged cable is between stuff#2 and the Injection system.

Anyway, if anyone's reading theis post, I downloaded the manual, and the unknown stuff should be the Fuel filter, the EGR valve and the Borg-Warner modulator.

I suspect that the last service might screwed up, and connected the EGR to the fuel filter instead of the Borg-Warner. Could it be even possible?

your problems are either the EGR valve or the Mass Air Filter; suggest take the egr valve off and clean out the throat of the inlet manifold it is likely to be choked with soot; you could block off the egr with a plate of stainless steel see my other posts on this; also do a search on MAF.....
