General What petrol is best for marea 1.6??

our resident forum sientist (sp) went on a field trip to shell and spoke to one of thier top optimax blokes, he said optimax only makes a diffrence on cars with a knock sensor.
i did untill i bought my mk2 punto say all standard unleaded is the same but now ive got an mpg thing on my dash is seems that i get more mpg out of normal shell unleaded than i do sainsburys unleaded, so i am rethinking this,

V-power (I assume you're not from the UK then) is actually in some areas better than the Optimax that we get here, for example in Australia, technically it's a much better fuel.

Does the Marea have a knock sensor? If not, the only benefit of using optimax over a standard fuel is the cleaning ability of the fuel (This is the opinion of the chief tester at the Stanlow Oil Refinery's technology centre who I spoke to for some time about it). In his words, without a knock sensor, he wouldn't use it. The engine can't change it's ignition timing to take advantage of the higher octane fuel etc.

alot of engines dont and the 1.6 was designed to run with 95octane in europe.
Have talked about this in the stilo forum about using optimax with the 1.6 and it seemed to not agree with that engine in that car.
Although it can add the advantage of giving better MPG, although the cost of the fual can outweight that.

I can remember when in germany with a rental Punto 1.2 8v. also designed for 95. Accidently put 92 octane in which the germans have (wasnt well marked, had a name like Euro or econ) and the car was upset with that, just didnt pick up well with dulled responce.

No. I eat rabbits.
