hi all, i'm new here to post on behalf of my 65 yr old father who is having a rather horrible but potentially dangerous issue with his marea. i am sincerely hoping that someone out there can shed some light on it! i'll give you the background and appologise in advance for a lengthy first post...

the car is a 52 plate marea elx auto, and my dad travels 100 miles a day round trip to work along some very nastyfast twisty roads. it is now intermittently cutting out on him, all lights on dash come on and sometimes he can knock it out of drive and blip and floor the accelerator and it will catch and continue but other times it dies completely and he has to wait a bit before it'll start again.

it has been to the garage local to him twice now, they put it on diagnostics and it flagged up cam or crank sensor, but while it was in they put on a bosche coil pack to see if that helped first, it didnt so back it went and diagnostices read no problem this time. mechanic shrugged his shoulders.

it then went to a mechanic friend of mine who located the fuel filter inside the pump and back flushed it just in case. my dad went on to do 60 odd miles no issues, but this very morning he took 100 yards and it dies twice!!! he has said a couple of times (not all) there has been a bit of a smell of petrol.

its one of those things that we cant predict when or why it happens, but he seems to think its more often than not as he eases of the pedal to corner or at lower speeds on straighter roads.

has anyone else encountered and fixed this problem? could it be electrical or injectors even?

thanks in anticipation for any help or advice :)

double posting is never a good idea, moved to bravo/a for you and then back here with a redirect left in bravo/a so they can see it :)

welcome to the forum

thankyou so much! you are a gem! :) fingers crossed we get some input eh?! :)

Hello

If a diagnostic says crank sensor it is most likely that. The problem does tally up with a faulty crank sensor. One crank sensor fault is struggling to detect a signal at a low RPM. If there is no signal the ECU thinks the engine is not turning.

Next I would change the crank sensor based on that ECU diagnostic result, and because your dad thinks it cuts out at low speed/rpm. What engine do you have?

hi adrian, yes its a 1.6 as above poster says. :) thanks for your input, can i now ask is the crank sensor easy to get to and change by a local garage or is a fiat only jobby like the cam sensor would be??
