Got a Marea Weekend 1.8ELX that has a sticking boot lock. Have got a little tool that fits in the centre hole on lock handle that works ok, but really need to fix it.
As the handle keeps sticking in the open position i'm assuming it will need pulling out and cleaning.
Any hints on how to get the lock out. Not got a manual and don't want bits all over the place 'cause i did something wrong.

try blowing it out with an air hose, then follow with liberal amounts of WD40

Seems to be a regular problem I have a 2000 weekender, and had the same problem last winter. It turned out to be the hairspring was heavily corroded, and would stick in the open position. Much WD40 etc, still stuck. Ended up, adding additional small coil spring, which has been fine since. Good luck in stripping it all down.

I had this fault aswell... Kept getting my dogs stuck in the back of the car, not very funny..!!!
Having stripped the whole lock apart I suspect the problem to be the fact that the pivot pins are made of mild steel not stainless steel. As they rust they not only deposit loads of rust particles in the pivot points but they also expand slightly and therefore jam up.... Just lubricating was not enough to sort my lock out... I had to dismantle the back of the car, drive out the pins and then file off the rust, reassemble and grease thoroughly to avoid rusting again... This was 2 years ago and my dogs have not got stuck in the boot since.....
Whole job took around 2 hours...!!!

Hey 20VMarea, yep can imagine no fun with dogs stuck in the back. Looks like we are keeping the car now ( was gonna get a 4x4 but to bloody expensive ). Have just had the dash out to replace some bulbs ( no mileometer!! ), not got round to the lock yet.
How do you get the lock out?? If you have to pull it all apart i'll get a new wiper motor at trhe same time ( yep thats packed up as well ).

It was a while ago so I am going by memory so some of the detail may be a bit inaccurate...!! The inside panel of the rear hatch has to come off to gain access to 4 (?) bolts that hold the black plastic rear fascia panel on... Back outside the car, the wiper arm unbolts from the wiper motor and I there is a small clip to pop off the end of the wiper mechanism to allow the panel to slide over the shaft. Watch how everything slides off so you can get it all back on it the right order..!! There is a clip to undo that connects the handle to the door release mechanism and a multiplug connector to disconnect the central locking... I think that is it.
Now you can clean and lubricate the pivots and hopefully this will allow the handle to pop up and down without any resistance.... I had to drill out one end of the plastic moulding where the pivot pins locate and drive the pin back far enough to release the handle and then file the pins clean, thoroughly greasing before reassembling to stop them rusting/jamming again.
Good luck and do not break anything....!! A replacement panel that includes the handle is around £70.00 from Fiat....

Hi,
I have had same problem twice, I think it is caused by dirt and grime spraying up the back.
If it is locked and you cannot open let down seats and get into boot area remove the rear plasic cover by unscrewing (behind red reflectors) and in centre, the rest is held by pop holders.
You can then open manually.
When metal area exposed you can clean and lubricate all areas to release. I found that if I put a finger in the hole neaest the flap I could feel a small lever and move this to get the release flap working again. if still stuck remove outer black plastic with allen key and operate there.
Best of luck

The boot catch and wiper motor are common problems on the Weekend. Mine is the same.

If you get a new motor at a decent price, can you let us know. I asked Fiat for a quote and it was £169 just for the motor!! I've decided I don't need to see out of the back.

Len Veich is right about taking the inside panel off. You have to remove the two reflectors first - just prise them off carefully with a screwdriver. Then you can undo everything else with an allen key.

I managed to free mine off with a bit of WD40 and moving it alot, but it's playing up again a year later.

Cheers
Al

Thanks for your help guys, got to get a new undertray now ( it got trashed on a speed ramp and now hanging off ), looking forward to calling Fiat dealer about that, NOT!! What do you reckon, £100 and 3 week wait???
Al scott, thanks for your help. Not got a wiper motor yet, but shop4parts link at top of forum home page are selling them for £80 which seems like a much better deal.

Hi Shaunos, i live just up the road from you at ulceby, and have a weekend like yours. I don't know if you know or not, but there is a chap near york who sells just fiat parts, and many of them are second hand, as he breaks fiats. I have been a few times myself, and his prices are very reasonable. They are much cheaper than new, and you can pick them up the same day, and check them before paying for them.

How you doing Pete W. No I didn't Know about the guy in york, Have you got his phone number handy. Could be worth a call!! Undertray is £80 from Fiat and wait 2 days if they have it in the UK. Seems to be the same story whatever part you want.

Hi,

I've got a MY200 Weekend with the same problem with the boot handle sticking open. I've found that if you lock the central locking from the driver's door then open it again, the handle flips back down again. Works for me every time! Not an ideal situation, but saves the hassle of dismantling the boot! :D

i just bought a 2.0HLX and it had the same problem

we dismantled the lock assy and found that the pivot hinge on the handle was sticking due to either muck or rust and no matter how much WD40 or grease we put in there it was not working so for a quick fix we just put a self tapper screw in the handle so we could just pull it down works a treat

That thing has been lika na pain in the butt for a year now. It´s a rainy day andnow I know what to do. Thanks a lot!! :)
