Hi

I realise this is something that has been reported here before...

HOWEVER; my lights come on after driving for a good while. In the Summer it comes on mostly after driving for about 40 mins - 60 mins in the morning. Once they come on they stay on and do not go off until the car has sufficiently cooled down over night. The cycle then starts again.

IN THE WINTER THE LIGHTS DO NOT COME ON AT ALL!

So I suppose this not a totally faulty ABS unit? Could something be overheating that's causing this?

I've taken it to a local garage once and they did not know what it was. I'm taking it to another garage and would like to tell the mechanic where he should be checking. Im not going to a Fiat garage at this time because it'll likely be very expensive to fix it there!

The annoying thing is that my MOT (car exam/testing) is in August! I suppose if there really was something wrong with the ABS it would NOT turn off, right?

Thanks

I'll be honest, I don't know what this is - but I would be starting with the ABS sensors and module and checking the connections. Sounds like a heat issue, Fords I have owned before have suffered various electrical problems due to heat expansion and it's always worth checking first.

Try a known good module and/or sensor(s) from another car to see if it cures it.

Make sure the car is cold when it goes for it's MOT if it isn't fixed by then ;)

get the ABS unit (the black part with the connector) nice and toasty with a hairdryer for a while and see if that brings on the lights.. could well be a a faulty unit.

Hi there, i really think it would be worth while you checking your battery terminals and all of your engine, gear box and chassis earth points, it sounds like when your cooling fan is cutting in your trying to draw to much power through a bad connection, if this is the case it will put warning lights on as for example you abs module is not receiving a good 12v.

good point by J26bja there, the standard wiring setup is quite terrible, as both main GND and supply connections to the ABS unit go onto the flimsy battery clamps, along with the fan supply. but when the car gets warm, do you hear the fans come on ? I would not expect them to come on while driving, except in traffic. And do the lights come on again even after a restart ?. BTW, the ABS light will also bring on the brake warning light anyway..

hi cyber,

i am from malaysia and i had the same problem as what u mentioned. i am pretty sure is the the 'poor' connection within the ABS control module circuit board. several marea also having the same problem over here.

here is what u can do, the control module on top of the ABS pump can be removed easily. then u need to slowly saw around the plastic casing to expose the PCB. yes...saw. the whole control module was glued. this is where u need patient and skill.

once u get that done, get yourself a medium soldering iron and start resolder all the point whichever you can on the PCB. the reason is because after a few year, those soldering points might have becomes weak and hi resistant. once u r done with it, u can install it back to the pump and test if the lights still there. if it is o.k., you can glue back the plastic cover using hi temp silicone

the whole job took me about 6hr, and totally worth if comparing spending a few thousand (overhere) to replace the control module.

hope this help....cheers.

Guys,

Had the same problem and when I took the car for a tyre change, I noticed a cable swinging around above the caliper (yellow boot on it) I re-attached this and lights have gone. The heat from the brakes/wheels must of set the sensor off.
Whip the wheel and ave a look!

This is interesting and worth a try before taking the unit out and fixing it, etc(thanks for the other replies however, very good stuff!)

Gierry; which wheel are your referring to? Right/Left , Front/Back?

My Marea is a left hand drive (steering wheel on left hand side), so could the cable be behind the opposite wheel to yours? (I assume you have a right hand drive, being in the UK.. )

Thanks (y)

Yeah, my car is a right-hand drive! The connector on the near side (passenger side) front wheel. It was okay until I got my front discs and pads done at Firela and now the lights come on all the time - annoying!

hello guys. i am writin from turkey. we live in south of turkey and its really hot here. so that problem you told occurs on my marea more often than you. its really interestin. when i took my care to fiat service they told that the whole unit must be changed which will cost 1600 turkish liras(more 1000 dollars) is it really too hard to fix it. and finally did you try what the malesian friend told.
