I am totally new to the newer fiats, though in the past I have had a Mirafiori, 126 and a punto Mk2 which were all great cars and I had no problems with them. (Well apart from the braking system on the Mirafiori which was a real nightmare.)

I have now just bought a 2002 Marea Weekend Auto on a 52 plate. It's the 1.6ELX and I am having real problems with the immobiliser.

The guy I bought the car from has changed the ECU, immobiliser and Ignition Barrel got the correct red key for the ignition due to a similar problem he had when he bought the car a year ago. The car ran fine for about a month then he left it sitting all winter with the result that the battery went flat.

When a new battery was put on the car the immobiliser light came on and the car will turn over but not start.

What I would like to know is how exactly can I reset the ECU and immobliser or does it sound like the car has another problem?

Hi!

Commonest fault you get with Fiat CODE immobiliser systems, ***assuming the keys are correct***, is failure of the transponder aerial coil fitted around the ign. switch/barrel assembly. This plugs into a small white (sometimes yellow) immobiliser box fitted behind the fuse/junction box. Its a bit of a swine to get at, so if you're in any doubt get a dealer to stick a diagnostic on it!

Try getting another new blue key from Timpsons (£45 or so & check they supply it chipped), and use your red key to try the new key memorisation procedure, detailed in the service manual under Section 55 Electrical Equipment (free PDF download, various links this forum!!!).

If the immobilisation will still not release, indicated by the Key Code Warning light going out, either the transponder aerial/codebox is u/s or there's a wiring fault that needs expert attention! Unfortunately there's no cheap way of fixing this except by sending the ecu and codebox to be recoded or the code disabled, £175-£250 I'm afraid!!! Look up "Codeman" on Google!

Sorry I can't be the bearer of more positive news! I've got electronics repair knowledge but I'm not up to the insides of ECU memory chips!

Finally got it fixed believe it or not it was a fuse, not blown but just not connecting properly . Have just sent the original ECU away for reprogramming too thinking it was that:cry: Still the ecu thats on the marea se4ems to be from a Manual and mines an Auto so fingers crossed the car will run right with the original ECU back on....might even clear all the dash lights.
