Hello peeps,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on my Marea problem.
She's a 20v from year 2000 and has covered 70k miles. The problem I have is that it only starts when it feels like it. When it failed to start I plugged in my code reader and got P0340 Phase Sensor. I decided to change the cambelt, waterpump etc and fitted a new cam position sensor at the same time.

When I cleared the fault after putting everything back together, the car started and ran no problem. When I switched it off after a test drive, it failed to start. I now get the same error code (P0340) as before. I managed to start it twice today but more often than not it won't start.

Sometimes, the key code light stays on but I just put the key in and out of the ignition a couple of times and it goes out. It still won't start mind and the injector light is just staying on all of the time now.

Is the ECU goosed???

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Notorious131,

'Old and knackered' lol? You must be in the same home as me. I'll look out for you!

I use DEC Superscan 11. It's a good piece of kit but I just keep getting the same error code with it. I've only had the car a few weeks as I bought it off of another 'old and knackered' bloke who gave up on it. It's in excellent order but it'd be a whole lot more usefull if it ran.....at least all of the time.

Regards.

Yep, symtopms say it should be the cam sensor, but in reality it's almost certainly the crank sensor. Its on the back of the block toward the flywheel end.

Mine used to do the same. Would start when cold, would run fine and fail to start when hot on a random basis.

Got one next day delivery for £21.00 from here: http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk

Was this the one in Preston on fleabay a few week's ago?

Hi Andy,

Yes, it was indeed the car from Preston! Well spotted, lol. It scrubbed up well and it's in very good order throughout. The guy I bought it off of has been very honest with me and I thought I'd solved the problem with a new cam sensor. My only issue Andy is that the chap I bought it from is sure that his local garage fitted a new crank sensor a few months ago when the problem first started!

Thank you very much for your input :)

Paul.

Well folks, I've replaced the cambelt, crank sensor and the cam sensor and.........it still won't start most of the time :-(

When it does start (every few days or so) it runs without fault. When I switch her off, she won't start for a few days again. Key code light stays on sometimes but injector (management) light stays on almost all of the time. Same fault code every time....P0340 Phase sensor (cam position sensor).

Please someone shed some light on this ever darkening scenario otherwise I've a feeling I might have to shoot it.....

before i finished reading your post i had cam phase screaming at me.

the reason this happens is that the phase sensor is only needed 50% of the time for the first fire, what has probably happed is who ever did you cambelt has mis aligned your exhaust cam slightly and it is causing this problem OR you phase sensor is shagged and needs to be replaced :)

Thanks RY, that's something else for me to try tomorrow. It's driving me nuts. The problem was there before I replaced the belt! Not sure whether the new cam sensor is faulty but I'll keep trying. Do you think it could be ECU related?

Thanks.

keep us up to date on this as it's better than corrie lol i cant wait till the next post ...hope you sort it mucca.....

Ha ha ha, lol. Thank God it's only a spare car otherwise I'd have dished out a Basil Fawlty style beating long ago. ;)

For sure, lol. P/head as in Peterhead? I'm hoping to have the car up and running by October, lol and might just take her on a tour of Aberdeenshire to show her off. I hear that the Weekend is a popular car for transporting sheep around Aberdeenshire as well as many parts of Wales :D

Well folks, I've been at the old girl again (the Marea that is) and this time I've swapped the ignition barrel, key code box and ECU with a friends 20v Marea. Surprise, surprise..... it still wont start though my friends Marea ran perfectly with my barrel, key code box and ECU!!!!! Still, that's something else i can chalk off the list now.

I might just offer a prize now to the person/s who can come up with the cause/cure.

Fingers on buzzers. I'm waiting .........

Hi Venters,
The loom looks spot on. I just can't get to the bottom of it. It will just start out of the blue and run perfectly all day long ........ as long as I don't switch it off, lol. Then it's usually around a week before it starts again!!!!

I had a simular problem . The key code light was on and the injector(managment light) on. car would not start. One day the car would start the next it wouldnt. You ve proberbly tried this already but , my problem was the fuse/relay box in front of the battery which too look at seemed ok but when i removed the fuses and the relays the slots for the fuses were built up with crap. i removed the fuse holders and tipped them upside down and sprayed them with electro solve spray. i think and i stand to be corrected but one of the fuses in there is for the fuel pump and also a 10amp fuse for engine managment. Worth a try if you hav nt already ,
hope this helps
Dave
