Posts: 15 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 | handbrake sticking on cold days! hi guys, is it common for the handbrake to stick on, on freezing cold days as mine as done, and is there anything i can do to prevent this from happening? My car is stuck on the drive at the moment with it being so cold with the rear brakes stuck on ! cheers guys!!

Posts: 8,473 Thanks: 1000 Trader Rating: 1 | Re: handbrake sticking on cold days! Often happens when the small rubber boots around the cable at the caliper end split. Water gets into the outer cable then freezes in cold weather. Then the cable doesn't release. Dave.

Posts: 8,473 Thanks: 1000 Trader Rating: 1 | Re: handbrake sticking on cold days! Don't put grease in if it's a plastic coated inner cable. Grease will soften the plastic over time and cause the cable to sieze. The oppisite of what you want. Dave.

AFAIK the older ones wernt plastic coated, the new ones i ordered recently were, but they seem much better quality anyway. still, its £60ish for FIAT replacements or £24 for pattern parts, although the pattern ones are only good for a year... |

Mine done this last week at 6am on the way to work , it turned out my nearside caliper had seized! -perfect timing . when you'v parked for the night b4 you turn the engine off put it in reverse then switch off,works like a handbrake also it cant be towed away as the wheels are locked . Joker

Just park it in gear and leave the handbrake off, if you feel like making it more secure just stick some chocks under the wheel incase. It seems to be a common problem at the minute with this cold weather, I don't know if you've got a garage but if you have park it in there, less time to de-ice and let everything warm up!
