if you have your original red key then you dont need to change your codebox and ecu. you can use the red key to teach the car any other key.

if you dont have your original red key then you do need the matching ecu and codebox from the car the new key came from. you dont need to use the ignition switch, you can simply take the new key's chip out and place it inside your old key, allowing your old key to work the locks (as it alwasy has) and also start the car.

assuming you have no old keys left, you can get one made to fit your locks using the glovebox lock. most locksmiths can do this.

or you could fit that new ignition barrel and live with having one key for the doors and another key for the ignition. personally i couldnt do that, it would drive me crazy.

Well got it sorted, just taped one of the original keys to the ring and cable tied it to the steering colunm then replaced the coweling.
I'm used to having different keys for ignition and doors cos my toyota carina is the same.

that works, but it means i could steal your car easily because the immob no longer protects it. you could start it with a screwdriver. if your insurance company was lucky enough to spot it after a theft you would not be covered unless you had declared that your immob was disabled beforehand.

now i think about it again, your ignition barrel can easily be modified to suit your original key, then all you need to do is stick the chip back in your original key and you're ready to go. to modify the barrel you simply remove it, then insert the key you want it to take, and then grind any protruding tumblers so they are flush with the barrel. using a dremmel it takes 5 mins.
