Hi all!

I hope someone here can help me.
I'm thinking on getting a Sony CDX-M8805X MP3/CD player (230$). Problem is, this radio is in USA an I want to import it here (Europe/Slovenia). Sony sells model CDX-M8800 (over 300 euro) here. Reading on their web page I can't see any diference between them.
Will it worke here??

.

If you look at this:

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Car_Radio_Frequency_Converters.html

It implies you don't need to cnvert FM band?

if I understand this right
"converts Australian/UK or USA FM band of 94-108MHz"
it means that in US they have FM band of 94-108MHz, here we have from 87-107MHz...
If this is the only problem, well maybe I will get it anyway

.E.

Sorry, you're right, didn't read it properly, we also go from about 87-107...

Without reading I just assumed because it said Aus/Uk/USA they were the same.

Quick question,

What is UK car FM band range? Is it from 87 to 107MHz? With 0.1MHz increment?

.e.

Wrong wrong, USA has 87 to 108mhz like anywhere else(some models actually read 86.9 to 108mhz).
I have a few stereos i bough while i lived in Canada and they all work like they should. If i remember my regulations correctly Japan was the only country with different band assignments, i could be wrong i´ve taken my ham license 7 years ago and rules change.

so, what you are saying is:
That car stereo mad for US will work here? Don't think so, as far as I know, US have 0.5MHz increment :(

I'm looking to find a way to change tuner settings for Sony CDX-M8805X (from US to EU). At Sony here, they say (accualy they don't know for sure) they have to replace a chip inside a radio, price for it is up to 70 euros. And it is only 90% sure that it will work.

.e.

increments are manufacturer specific and have nothing to do with regulations(a station can be anywhere between 87 and 108 as long has there is a .5mhz step in between nearest stations, my radios all have .1mhz increments (but can be changed in the setup for most expensive ones). It should still work with .5mhz increments even though i haven´t seen such a radio yet(worth importing at least:p).

you would go for it? I mean, you would import it?
Do you perhaps know where on the internet could I find more info, regarding changing FM tuner? Tried Sony.com, various US exporters, but no luck...
Radio is cheap, but to expensive to work just on 50%...

You already have the specks you need, and who listens to fm anyways when you got a cd full of mp3s:D.

Yes, it should work fine. My kenwood KDC-X979 (CD/MP3/WMA) Deck is far more expensive and is working flawlessly(that´s what i got in my Calibra)

Heres what i found(so it works as is)

Frequency range (200 kHz space)
: 87.9 MHz – 107.9 MHz

courtesy of Sony customer support(i did say i had friends in good places)
who also said this deck is available in europe with the same model!!!

I'll go for it then. As I said I contacted many US exporters and they all said no...
This link I got from one of them is what bothers me...

European Tuning No

But if you say that "friends at Sony" said it will work. I'm ordering it...

Thanks a lot!!! If you ever come to Slovenia, look me up, we'll go for a beer :)

.e.

that just means it won´t be spot on frequency to the station you´re listening, but it will be heard clearly. I don´t know how they say that when the same model is available here.

check this one out, both those models say european tuning no yet you know the 8800 is available.

Not sure about RDS, it works on my decks and they all came from canada. I guess the system should be universal.

Can you ask your friends at Sony, how to change tuner seeking preferences? (As far as I know, by looking at various pages, Sony uses the same tuner type here as in US) If it is possible just to enter code, and unlock it... as in DVD's :)

looking about your radio
Kenwood KDC-X979
It has European Tuning... Can you give me some other radios you had that were imported from Canada?

It should be in the menu, the 200khz steps can be changed to 50khz or that´s what he said at least. He´s not sure wether the option is available by default or needs unlocking because this is a fairly new unit utilizing a new processor system. So short answer is yes, how hard he doesn´t know yet. I´ll post or pm when i find out;).
