petrol put in instead of Diesel

right. I've done it. I've put petrol instead of diesel into the tank.

I was stressed to 'ell and was thinking of something else. Also I'd just filled the wife's (Clio 1.2 petrol).

After about 1 mile, it started running like a bag of crap. At this point, I didn't even realise until I got home and tried to start it up again and she smoked alot.

A friend says he'll give me a hand if I can have advice, I'd be very greatful. Replies saying "do a superman and spin around the earth really fast which will put the clock back 24 hours" will not be accepted.

really you should drain it all out and fill it back up with diesel, diesel fuel is also used too lubricate the fuel pump which can cause internal damage if you run petrol. expensive.
the best way too drain the tank is too remove the level sender unit out of the top of the tank and suck it out, there is an access panel under the boot mat if its a weekend.

The worst that could happen is a seized engine, but probably it just overheated. Replace fuel in tank with diesel and see if it starts, as long as the engine cranks over your lucky.

update :-

Drained the tank out and removed the filter and drained out completley.

When the ignition is switched on it pumps so much diesel through the system so we did that as much as possible.

We filled the filter with diesel and put it back in place.
We then put 5 gallons of diesel into the tank and then ran the car for about 5 mins ideling. Then blasted her a few times.

We're guessing that there was about half a pint of unleaded still in it that we couln't get out. Mixed with the diesel, it might miss the odd beat but I took it along for a good run last night with no probs.

Many Thanks for the replies.

thing is, I was thinking of getting the 1.5 diesel model instead but the cost of a new diesel was too much extra. Went for the 1.2 instead.

I still would have probably got it wrong anyway.

I've been told that you can't do it the other way.

Re: petrol put in instead of Diesel

that's right as the size of the nozzles on the forecourt pumps are different - the diesel has the bigger nozzle so it wont fit into the hole on your pertol tank filler pipe. I think everyone has made the mistake at some time usually the petrol will mix over time and in most cases no damage occurs, just runs a bit jumpy and misfires for a couple of hundred miles. good luck
