I have a 110JTD marea weekend 2001 with 64K on the clock. I have a couple of issue that someone might be able to give me some idea on

1) Engine Hiccup / stopping - occasionally the engine will hiccup / misfire. It normally loses power as well at this point. OK if I am at any decent speed as it will just keep going. But if I am stopped / idling / going slowly it will just stop. The engine will then turn over ok but not start. Give it 10 mins though and it will start again. Have noticed the occasional flicker of the Fuel filter warning light but not usually at the same time as the engine issue. Everything else seems ok.

2) Seems to be down on power. With foot buried through the floor in 4th or 5th it doesnt seem to pull like it should. Had a 1997 100TD in the past and from memory that pulled a lot better.

Any ideas on either issue?

First thing I would try is disconecting the MAF sensor see if it runs any better if it does you either need to clean it or if its not successful a new one. Im sure someone else will chip in with some ideas before long.

well, no look so far. I have changed the fuel filter and the MAF sensor and no real change!!! The misfire / hiccup is still there. I had the same problem at the weekend -- its almost like fuel starvation or flooding. When it stops you just have to leave it for 5 or 10 mins and then it starts.

cant see that its something major as it starts first time every time and seems to run ok.

anyone got any pointers or know a good garage in the midlands with diagnostics?

hi,

based on your problem, it could be due to poor connection problem. when the engine is hot, the resistant of some socket might be high and giving disconnectivity. hav u check the wiring for each injector? JTD is not the same as TD where u don't have electronic controlling the injectors.

there is a big socket behind the battery or under the MAF. maybe try to plug and unplug to get a better connection.

i sounds like no fuel coming... if you are sure the fuel filter is ok, then check the incoming fuel pump pressure from tank. maybe that is the problem.

Thanks

I will check the wiring to the injectors and also the big socket tonight.

The engine has stopped twice on a 40 min journey this morning. For information the first problems always seem to be about the same time - after about 10 mins or 4 or 5 miles.

I have had the fuel filter on for about a week and the light has already started flashing - is this a sign of something else? Is there a filter in the tank? The filter i changed was by the bulkhead (behind the engine).

Is there a sensor in the exhaust at all. I have a noise that I cant trace properly - it sounds like a wheel bearing or the exhaust blowing at the back but everything seems ok there. But on tick over there is a bit of a blowing sound from the front.

What is the best way to check the incoming fuel pump pressure?

Thanks in advance

Well I have checked the wiring to the injectors and the big socket and everything seems ok. I just had the engine running in our factory and noticed a bit of a low pitched drone noise from the air filter box area. Is this normal. Also as there was very little risk of contamination I disconnected the hose from the air filter box - when I rev the engine I get a whistling sort of sound. Is this normal.

I have noticed there is a small amount of oil on the large ridged hose at the bottom of the engine. Not sure if its new or old but cant see anything else oily round that area.

Really starting to get fed up with it :(.

Has anyone had any experience of the diagnostic stuff that you can find on Ebay? I really dont want to have to pay dealer prices if I dont have to.

workshop should have a pressure gauge test kit to test the incoming fuel pressure to the fuel filter. if the fuel filter indicator comes on, it somehow 'detects' water in it. u might meant the fuel heater is giving up if there is one (depends on model). may i know what the weather there now?

u don't have to go to Fiat dealer to have a diagnosis. some of the workshop do have the scanner for error code checking...

Hi

It is 2 - 8 degree celcius, it has also been quite wet. A change in the weather - a bit warmer or colder or if its wet or dry does not seem to affect it.

The car stopped again last night. Again it was within the 5 miles - 10 minutes sort of range and again I had to wait about 10 minutes for it to start again.

It is like you say as if a sensor is overheating or similar.

I have really driven it hard a couple of times recently after it has stopped - frustration getting the better of me . I have taken it up to the red line - no black smoke or anything -

Looks like a trip to a garage with a diagnostic machine.

Right, been doing some searching on other sections and have found a couple of bits on Bravo/a JTD and Stilo JTD forums.

Here's what people have found when they had similar problems

1) Fuel pressure, fuel regulator, fuel pump issues
2) The one that sounded just like it is https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-technical/127415-stilo-02-1-9jtd-engine-cuts-out-split-second.html

Pretty sure your jerkyness fault will lie with the crank sensor. Over time they degrade or just get tired LOL and break down due to the heat.
I've got an 02 JTD and had to replace mine a few months back.
Mine got worse very quickly to the point the jerk would cut the engine out and wouldn't restart until cooled abit.

your problem sounds like the crankshaft position sensor.

Was just about to say... cps..

If damaged by heat/age they lose the ability to detect the teeth on the flywheel when hot. It's about a £20 part and if you have a set of ramps and ribe bit set can be fixed reasonably easily by the budding mechanic.

Oil around the big air hose is normal. Not sure how it gets there but it's there on almost all turbo diesels! Whistling noise is good... that's your turbo!

edit: There are 2 parts listed for your car - so you'll need to use the VIN to make sure you get the right one.

OK - I have bought a new sensor (just hope its the correct one) after reading hellcats post

Where do I find the crank sensor? I read something about it being above the starter or something on a bravo/a. I can see a sensor below a couple of linkages that I think are by the clutch. Between the battery and engine and towards the back.
