Guys looking for some help.

My brother has a 1.6ELX Marea and the dashboard display (digital mile/trip counter) cannot be read anymore. I don't know whether this is a fuse that has blown (if it is we can't find it) or whether the display has just packed in, anybody got any ideas???

The 10A front right side light fuse also supplies the dash instrument lights. If this is OK then it is likely to be a bulb fault. One way to check if it's the bulb or the display at fault is to shine a torch at the display with the ignition turned on. If the display is working the light will reflect back and you will be able to read the display.

The bad news is that it is nearly a dash removal job to get to the bulb unless you know a smart little kid with a double jointed elbow.

Display faults usually mean a console replacement unless you have a tame electronics expert to hand.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :D

If the light shines on the display in a certain angle then you can read the mileage etc, so I think that it is a bulb job. I guess that the cost of replacing a bulb will be WAY to much for the benefit that you will get back. I'll let him know anyway and he can decide.

Thanks for the help.

I had one of these out in ten minutes! Not bragging but I found nothing hard about it, drop the steering wheel take of the trim covering the cluster and blower vent four T20 screws I think then another four to hold it in, there is no tight speedo cable as its electronic, tilt it forward undo the clips for the wiring and slide it out gear lever side and change the bulbs! Get stuck and fancy a drive to slough and I'll do it for free! Interestingly enough if anyone owns a marea/bravo/a and when they turn the ignition on the display goes through an sequence of alphabetics across the display then it has been "clocked". I found this out when I swapped dash pods to check a speedo fault, It went through this cycle and then displayed incorrect mileage that was stored in the memory.

I don't want to discourage you, but I had the exact same problem, that resolved only after the ECU was replaced ($$$). At first the display would appear/disappear for no clear reason. Then it would vanish leaving only a faint glow (cheshire cat style). Then it was lost forever. Since the new ECU, everything is back to normal.

I know it's a bit late, but just changed bulb on my wifes marea (TD100 ELX)Cost £1.50 from halfords. Took me more than 10 mins (about 30). Don't forget the screw into the RH airvent (get to it from where the fuses are), and push the clip up where the vent attaches to the dash.

And it is worth doing.
