I drive Fiat Linea, 1.3 Quadrajet diesel engine. Since some time, i use to get this warning message indicating insufficient oil pressure, and the engine use to consume engine oil so much. Oil pump was recently replaced, and EGR is been cleaned. I observed that the engine oil is flowing back into coolant container and i think that is when this insufficent oil pressure message is popping up. It used to happen when driving at low speeds, but yesterday it was continuous warning that insufficient oil pressure and the coolant container was so much under pressure and the flow of engine oil into coolant container is found. What would u think is the faulty guy in this scenarios. The fiat service guy is proposing to change engine head saying there might be issue with head and valve. But is that the reason? what are the other things i might have to lookinto before actually deciding to change the cylinder head. Thanks much in advance for your help.

Hi, and welcome to FF:)

it does sound like there is a leak between the water and oil systems, :(

the HEAD GASKET is a common culprit for these issues,
but thankfully the simplest to fix, (y)

Hi there,

I don't know much about cars but I used to own a Peugot 207 before my FIAT GP and I got that exact warning message, upon looking under the bonnet I knew straight away it was headgasket!

Has your coolant tank got gunk/slime in it? or is there any gunk/slime around that area on the engine?

The container with blue cap is oil coolant and as you can see it turned black and it's because of engine oil back flow into the oil coolant container, when ever there is back flow there is so much of pressure built inside the oil container and insufficient oil pressure message is popped ad error message in the display. So what do u think is the faulty guy here? The Fiat guy is suggesting me to change the head or get the engine bore done. So who would be the faulty guy for making engine oil flow back into oil coolant? How can it be fixed? Thanks much in advance.

Hi again, :)
still looks like a cylinder Head Gasket fault,:(

easiest test;

get a cooling system pressure test done,

that will be uneffected by cylinder bore wear;)

until you can attest to a sound cooling system - there is no point going further(n)

out of interest..how many KM's / miles on the vehicles engine..??

+1 to head gasket fail

Also one question, why Fiat cars made in India have hydraulic assist steering system and not the electric power steering like EU cars have?

more akin to PALIO than punto I believe..,

Charlie

Even the classic Grande Punto in India use hydraulic system
New (latest 2015) version too.

(notice the power steering fluid tank in the picture, this is a GP with a starjet 1.4 16v)

Hey guys I showed it the car at other Fiat service station and he is proposing it could be because of coolenth bed issues. He is proposing to get the coolant bed replaced and flush the engine oil, coolant and radiator completely before going on to head. Would u guys think it would help?

Hi,
I don't understand the term "Coolant BED"..

BUT not worth replacing ANY parts until you've done a cooling system pressure test,

FYI - the cooling system is DESIGNED to run at a small pressure ( that's how the coolant can be 110'C - and STILL NOT BOIL)

therefore a system that cannot hold pressure is Faulty and NEEDS to be fixed,

Charlie

Thanks much. He proposed to replace the cooler bed in order to avoid mixing of coolant and engine oil. And I am not sure we have equipment to do pressure check. It sucks?. Thanks much Charlie

The cooler bed is something with 5~7 plates that helps rotation of coolant into the engine. But yes I see the boiling of coolant oil so I think there is definitely pressure losses somewhere.

Its oil filter, they asked to change, but the problem still exists, the engine temperature going high, getting insufficient oil pressure message, and under the bonnet, engine oil s found in Coolant. So should i go for head gasket or intake manifold gasket?

hi,
I still suspect the HEAD GASKET,
but the intake gasket will need to be accessed ( removed) in the process of Head Gasket change anyway,

Stop driving the car before you damage the engine completely.

then, (basic step) change garage.

Find an other and tow the car there. Don't drive it anymore. Insufficient oil pressure warning = epic engine damage on the way.

Head gasket is gone for sure.

Na, the headgaskets almost never fails. The oilcooler unit fails more often. Its a complete unit whit oil filter, and bolted to the engine with 4 bolt.
