Hi,
it looks a bright car..

tyres.. is it just worn out..? or is the inner edge trashed..and the outer still quite good.. that's a mechanical issue - tracking/or worse

( lesson for future.. keep any eye on this.. as it COULD have put 6 POINTS on your licence) dangerous condition...

welding.. it's at an age where they CAN fall apart..

get a quote for the welding..less than 200 , then it's another year to save / look for a newer / better car.

any more - don't bother

I've done this with several mk2's .. they rot-out in the end.. yours is now 15 years old..

Re: Mot Fail

so what was the welding quote..??

I spent @400 to get all the fail AND advisories plated.. ( to make it last..)

next years MOT it needed ANOTHER 400 - so I scrapped it

the reason for the terminal corrosion is the underseal applied when built;

it DRIES over years, then CRACKS as it shrinks,
water gets under the surface..but is essentially trapped there " under a skin",
and rust really gets a hold

so worth checking the state of the 2/B

Well they quoted me 700 to weld the whole bottom of the fiat and remove the seats etc etc. I just didnt want to pay that and decided to get a new one instead.

And im quite happy as the mk2/b i got seems fine and run fine and smooth. Lets hope it doesnt bring the same problems.

I understand you backing off at a quote like that ..

However, welding is something that you can do yourself.

Back in 1984 I used to play around with old Rovers - the 'bangers' of the day. Welding was always a big issue, due to costs.

I bought a mig welder and obtained a big pub-bottle of carbon dioxide and got a friend to show me how to use it. I also bought a video cassette of how to weld (that was in the days before anybody had heard of a computer, let alone the internet..).

It's a lot easier than you would imagine. It isn't a 'black art' by a long shot. It's something that you'll pick up in about 30 minutes..

Nowadays they have 'gasless mig welders' which are quite cheap.

For the home mechanic who wants to keep a car on the road .. well .. why not? You can do it.
