Air Recirculation

I keep seeing this mentioned in the specs and various reviews and stuff.

Is it just the option to use fresh air or cabin air as many cars have, or is it something special ?

Re: Air Recirculation

As you can probably guess, a normal ventilation system uses fresh air dragged in from the outside to cool/ heat the interior.

'Air recirculation' basically does what is say's on the tin. Rather than bringing in fresh air, it recirculates the air inside the car, for the following benefits:
  • It can heat the car up quicker in winter (the heater matrix is heating warmed air rather than cold air)

If you have air conditioning it will cool the interior quicker

If the atmopshere is polluted, i.e. you are following a smelly bus, you can stop the smells getting into the car

However, you should not use air recirculation for long periods of time because it increases the carbon monoxide levels in the car. This is because you breath Carbon Monoxide into the car, but the car keeps recirculating it.

Also, in the winter the lack of fresh air means that the windows will get moisture on the inside.

I don't use it for more than 5 minutes at a time

Re: Air Recirculation

If you have proper CC in a car, it will control the recirculation for you - and open and close outside vents accordingly.

On the Stilo, it is called AQS - I presume Air Quality System.

Re: Air Recirculation

I guessed that was what it is, but is it just me or have Fiat made a big deal about it, as if it is something special.

I cant renember a car without this feature.

Re: Air Recirculation

I think I decided my car doesnt have aircon, thenI had a thumb through the manual and it describes a star marked button as 'manual climate control' and goes on to say it runs on r22.

So it does have aircon ? Wheres the condensor then, I couldn't see one, or a pump.

I guess the easiest thing is to switch it on and see if it gets cold, but I'm sat here naked, so it will have to wait.

Re: Air Recirculation

It the car has the button marked with a star that's described in the manual then you have A/C. What car do you have?

If you have never used it and you have had the car for a while then you are damaging the A/C. It needs to be used regulalry so that the compressor and valves etc. are kept lubricated, otherwise they will cease and cost the best part of 600 to overhaul!
