i sent the link to European Consumer Centre and asked if it was correct, this was their reply

Thank you for your enquiry to the UK European Consumer Centre for Services. Please quote your reference number which can be found in the subject field in all further correspondence with us.
From your submission it appears like you would like us to confirm whether the content of European Commission's webpage with information regarding the extent of protection applicable to consumer purchases is correct.
We can confirm that the information included in the page you linked in your email is indeed correct. Please be advised that the length of time within the consumers can make such claims against retailers is at least two years, whereas the protection offered to consumers in England and Wales may even span for up to six years from the date of purchase. This being said, all such claims are subject to problem not being caused by fair wear and tear and/or misuse and if the complaint is made outside of the initial six months from the date of supply, the consumers can be requested to prove that fault was present at the moment of purchase.
Please note that these rights are given to consumers in addition to any warranties offered by the manufacturers and are commonly referred to as 'statutory rights'
