2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Sorry if this type of thread has been repeated ad nausem through the forums but I cannot see one that references this question for newer Puntos, so here goes.....

I have just purchased a new Punto Active 2005 and rather than pay the extortionate amount Fiat to install a CD player for you, I thought I would get it with the standard stereo, remove it and fit my own. Now obviously the stereo is one of those that is moulded into the dash type things, and I know it can be removed and a suitable fascia blanking plate put in there to fit a new steroe. However I really wanted to see if anyone knew the correct procedure for doing this removal before I dive in their myself and start pulling on things, in an effort to keep my dash looking nice and new

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

if it is the same as my mk2 you will need a set of reliese pins. you can get them from halfords or any car audio shop. Should be bout 2. They are like two u's and they push into the little holes on either side of the system then when you hear the click just pull and the system should come with it.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Thanks steviepab, I was hoping that there might be an easy answer to it!
I may have a couple of those removers hanging around some place from a previous stereo, but if not i'll pick some up.

Should I be expecting nice standard connections on the back of the Fiat built in stereo? that will be compatible with whatever header unit I purchase, or is there a chance that I may have a bit of messing around to do?

fiat have got a standard wiring block

you may need to buy the connections that hook upto the headunit, unless they come with it, you be looking to pay about 15 for this

what i found when fitting mine was that both powerleads, continious and switched yellow/red from headunit need to be connected together, as fiat wiring block has only 1 power output

Cocktail sticks or bend coat hangers also work heh!

And they are far cheaper.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Thanks all I might try the coat hanger out before I buy some of the proper tools

Does anyone have a link to a website that shows the converter cable needed to go from the "standard Fiat wiring block" to the ISO connector my header will likely have? It doesn't matter what he site is, just so I can see what i'm looking for....many thanks

New Puntos dont have an ignition live to the radio and they have CAN connectors in the power din connector. These need to be removed and you will also need to find an ignition live.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Theres a difference between the Mk2 and 2.5??

If not, it was just a straight swap for me, with an adaptor lead. It works when ignition is off.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

i gave up with mine and just re-wired it. Tried two converters yet both kept stayed on while the key was out which was no good as i had a sony blackout system. i prefere to use the propper tools but each to there own huh.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Hmm thanks for all your advice guys, not being overly confident with car wiring I may simply purchase the header and new blanking fascia and find someone who will fit it for me for a small charge.

Can anyone recommend anyone in the oldham/Manchester area?

My other option is that the dealer gave me the number of the fitter that they use when installing a new stereo at point of sale, and he charges 150 as a foreigner to come and do it for you. Call me tight, but I just kind of object to paying that much

My Mk2 Punto had both the powerleads in the correct places in the plug and it was just a case of removing the old and in with the new

Halfords offer free fitting on some headunits and they actually have some very reasonably priced ones too depending on when you buy. I'd check out the website.

Re: 2005 Fiat Punto stereo removal

Its a 10 minute job, don't pay someone to do.

Buy the headunit, and if you are lucky, it'll just be a case of plugging the adpator in.

You'll need an aireal adaptor too (couple of quid).
