Hello
can anyone help. I have fiat punto grande 1.2active 58. When i turn the key in the ignition to start it up the engine is making a grinding noise. It starts eventually but it can take a few attempts. starter motor is brand new as was happening with old one but starter doing again after few days

Any ideas what could be causing this ??

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the problems that come with fiats lol. They are no where near as bad as people make out but they have their issues.

Anyway your problem is one I have experienced in my own 1.2 grande. I'm not mechanically savvy but I hear it's something to do with the starter belt being tight or something like that. Or at least that's what a garage guy said to me. Don't hold me to that. You will find it only happens after a long period of stand still and if it's a bit cold. I.e first thing on a morning. My solution which again is based on my personal usage. Is to turn the key to ignition and leave it like that for a minute until all the lights on your dash go off. Except battery and hand brake light obviously lol. And then hold clutch in and turn the keys whilst applying a little bit of throttle.

Same issue I have with my car on really cold mornings, especially if its been sat for a while, several garages suggested its a tight belt so its not a huge issue. I find putting your foot on the clutch and touching the accelerator slightly solves it. Eventually, the belt will naturally loosen and it wont happen as much/at all.
