whast the relationship with fiat and alfa, lancia, ferrari etc. apart from the fact that they are italian!

dunno where but i heard that alot of alfas cars are bassed on fiat cars (plus alot of them look very similar but with alfas unique styling (eg, the alfa that looks remarkably like the coup, and isnt one of the alfas based on the stilo but with a diff engine?)

just wondering

All those companies were individual manufacturers originally. Gradually Fiat took control of Lancia then Alfa. Ferrari are under the Fiat umbrella but not wholly owned by them. Maserati are under control from Ferrari and Lambo by the VW group. Basically, Fiat own nearly everything now!

err.... doesn't the italian government own most of FIAT anyway..? Oh, and Alitalia, and most things Italian?

It's complicated!

Fiat Auto owns Lancia, Fiat and Alfa.

Fiat Group owns Fiat Auto, and Ferrari, and Iveco (Trucks) and New Holland (Tractors) and loads of other stuff motor and non-motor related.

Ferrari is 90% owned by Fiat Group (not Fiat Auto) and 10% by the Ferrari Family and private shareholders.

Maserati is 50% owned by Fiat Auto and 50% owned by Ferrari (which is owned by Fiat Group. Work that one out!)

Fiat Auto is 20% owned by General Motors and 80% by Fiat Group.

Fiat Group is a PLC of which the Italian Government has shares but the Agnelli family retains a controlling share and therefore runs the company.

Alitalia today don't exist... Italian governament controls Finmeccanica a big public company that controls also Alenia Aeronautica: a company that makes aircrafts and space modules...

i.e. Some parts of the new fighter Typhoon are designed and assembled by Alenia Spazio...

Fiat Auto owns

Lancia 100%
Alfa Romeo 100%
Abarth 100%
Innocenti 100%
Autobianchi 100%

the last three don't exist today...

Ferrari was 100% Fiat up to some months ago, they sold the 34% of it to Mediobanca for money to invest in new models....
However at this time Ferrari is controlled by Fiat Auto...

Maserati is 100% Ferrari...

Lamborghini is 100% Volkswagen....

Alfa shares some parts with Fiat models... but only some small components...
platforms Fiat and platforms Alfa Romeo are quite different!!!

i.e. Stilo and 147 are two different cars!!!!

Never mind that, what do you think will happen when I ask my local Fiat Dealer for a test drive and payment example for the Fiat Train!!!

Liam

fiat make those crap Pendolino trains that run from euston... the old BR APT that the tories pulled funding from was far superior, so not everything Fiat is good!!!
Roby, have Fiat ever had their fingers in Piaggio? Its just that I heard an Agnelli owned them...

There is a page on Wikipedia all about Fiat relationships, don't know how up to date it is though;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIAT

Also, as far as I know Alstom make the Pendolinos in their two Italian factories, Fiat just did the development of the 'Tilting' bogies.

They took the APT system that ran until 1985, and did further work on it, ironing out problems like the 'Tilt sickness' that was controversial at the time. (y)

Must agree nuova that with the proper development funding from the Government, all the 'niggles' could have been sorted and the APT would've been best in world as BR were nearly there. Tories weren't interested though. :bang:

GTV and coupe are nearly the same.

The gearbox that is in the 156 t/spark 5 speed came from the fiat tipo and has been made to handle more torque...

This gearbox is used in nearly everything larger than a punto.

1.8 16v engine is just an alfa 1.8 without twin spark

156/147 selespeed is same as stilo abarth

V8 in the upcoming 8C alfa is from maserati

electric window switches in ferrari 348... alfa 164 !

swings and roundabouts at the end of the day.

Fiat also make rocket engines for spacecraft and satelites !
