just wondering what peoples experiences with them are. i'm looking to get a kit and have a go at the one on my tipo. is this a wise thing to do or best left to exeperts? i think the kits come with instructions but is there anything else i need to watch out for?

you get a fair few bits and pieces, i've never managed to fit them all when servicing a carb, i only use the bits i need. if it aint broken dont fix it :)

Hi there, had to service mine last year. I decided to replace as much as possible with the kit and to clean it out as best i could with carb cleaner and the clever use of a vacuum cleaner and a straw! :D I had lots of trouble with jets blocking so I really wanted to ensure that no bits of dirt were left in the tiny tubes that make up the webers innerds!! I think what was happening was that the old gasket that separated the top and bottom half was degrading and peices were occasionally falling into the float chamber.

Things I would recommend to do if you are doing it yourself are:

1) Check the floats for leaks (or even better replace it if the kit comes with it!) Can do this by holding it under water for a little while and observing any bubbles that rise.

2) Clean it out as thoroughly as you can as I was explaining earlier. But dont use anything that might contaminate the fuel or break up (like loo roll) as I found a bit of something I had used to clean mine out with had blocked a jet and was running so badly as it was one of the main accelerator jets! :(

3) Make sure you lay out the pieces carefully so you know which order they go back together again. So easy to put a jet back in the wrong place (well it was on mine as it was symetrical :eek:

4) I guess they all have needle valves? They wear out suprisingly easy I think. Definately a good idea to make sure that is replaced. In the kit that should come in a small plastic protecting case as it is very delicate and if scratched would I imagine make the car run very badly.

5) Infact, i think it would be best to remember in general to check every part you put back on (new or old) for any dirt / grit etc. I blow through the jets checking the individual holes for any signs of blockages aswell.

That is all I can think of for the moment, but doesnt mean there isnt more. It is late! They are fiddly to do, but I dont think its impossible. Service kits arent that expensive (when considering that new carbs can be hundreds). Entirely up to you really, dont do it alone though if you arent too certain as to what to do though would be my advice. I dont want to encourage you to risk wasting moneys!

right i buggered it up but sort of fixed it now. though still have a few issues. firstly i have had a problem with going round lefthand corners. but i think i've solved that by sealing it better.
secondly the revs don't stay still on idle. isn't there some sort of idle pump to stop stalling and increase the revs. i'm sure it's this as adjusting the mixture makes little difference. just wondering if i haven't connected something up right? is there anyway to disconnect this to make sure it's not playing up?

really wish i hadn't touched it now. have had problems with the kit and now i seem to of sorted that there's new problems. any help will be much appreciated.
 
Webber replacement would have been the best choice... :D
 
that's what i though i was buying.. it seems to be for a similar but lower spec carb which i'm not too happy about.

anyway update.

Can get it to idle well if a little high, by disconnecting the wire to the throttle stop screw. when it is connected it revs, then cuts out, then revs, then cuts out, then revs, etc, etc.

the fuel cut out seems to work fine, as soon as it's disconnected the engine stops.

is there anyone which can help? for now i can run it without the stop screw bit connected. though it's going to use more fuel this way.

is there anyway of testing the circuit? is it just a case of observing the values on a multimeter and hoping for a fixed reading?
