I'm a learner driver and bought my very first car in late January, a 1998, Fiat Punto sx 75 1.2 5 dr. The problem is a green light near the radio seems to be draining the battery and I can't get it off when I press the button it displays the sign Fiat? what is it cos the flaming battery is dead again and I don't know what to do. My neighbour is getting sick of me asking her to jump start the car.
Please can anyone help? The car is just sitting outside doing nothing.

First welcome to the FIATFORUM i can't halp you with your problem it's a bit early on a sunday morning for anyone else to be on the forum.
If you call by later i am sure someone will have an answer for you.
They like helping people with there Fiat problems..
:)

It will take more than a little green LED to flatten the battery. If there is a problem, that is not the cause. Borrow another battery and do a substitution test.

i agree with pete, no way an LED will be draining your battery - could be battery problem or an alternator problem or summin else entirely - someone a bit more mechanically minded will help u out i am sure.

has the battery had a full charge since it first went flat? (ie have you gone on a fairly long drive?)

SEI-POWER

How long before the battery is flat.
It may be the battery is has had it if it the original one (5 years).
As mention try another battrey.
Or it may be the light in the boot staying on.
Or try this when it dark if you look at the dash does charging light glow. with the engine runing does the charging go out.
Because the alternator can drain the battrey as well light in the boot you may have faulty alternator.

hope this is of help

Try and check the main power wire to the alternator .
the wire may be corroded at the termial on the rear of the alternator
and just holding on by the outer cover.

Thank you all so much for the information you gave me.
Armed with this info I rang autoparc in Newcastle where I bought the car in January this year, they sent a guy out to jump start the car, then I asked him about the alternator and the battery. what I got was a face full of ??????????
So I took the car to a local garage who stated the alternator and the battery were finished!!!!!!!!!! ( I was informed before I bought the car that it had, had a full service, but its not on the log book for 2002). I rang the garage and informed him and they're coming to pick up the car tomorrow to sort it out. I also explained that the power assisted steering wasn't working and he informed me it didn't have pas I told him it had been advertised as such on their website and his assistant informed it had pas before I bought it, so I asked him to exchange the car for another one? He told me he couldn't because he had to pay the vat on the one I bought from him? (Don't really know what this means) So I'm still without a car, and so can't go anywhere. I'm sick and fed up. But without you all I wouldn't have known what to do. Thank you. Any other suggestions or anything I should look out for or do, I will be aternally grateful. my sinsere thanks, mrsval.

So this bloke has falsely advertised this car u bought then? I.E. lied about it. Did u get it off a dealer or a private sale? Bcos if its a dealer im sure u cud s**t him up by ringing that fair trading standards or something ;) then he mite take it back.

Hi, I would like to extend my thanks to you all for giving me some great advice. Here's what happened:
1. I rang the dealership I baught the car from, autoparc in Newcastle, they sent a guy around and he jump started the car, then armed with the info you all gave me I took the car to a local garage and was informed the battery and the alternator were finished!!!!!
I rang autoparc back and explained what the guy in the garage had said and believe it or not he actually asked me if I would drive the car back to the site to have both items sorted, I told him in my opinion the car wasn't safe to drive so he is sending someone to pick up the car tomorrow.
When I bought the car I was told that it had power steering, not so I was informed today! no wonder the steering felt really heavy to me.
I asked him if he would exchange the car but he informed me that he couldn't because he had to pay the vat on it??????? I don't understand this.
This was my very first car and its been quite a bad experience having only been able to drive it for about 1.1/2hrs since january 2003. I was also told before I handed over the cash that the car had, had a full service not so. so buyer beware.
I'm now considering forking out the cost of a full AA service because this experience has left me feeling quite vulnerable as I don't know what else might be wrong with the car.
The dealership was supposed to be a good one in which I was too trusting.(This guy is giving fiat a really bad reputation as I could never recommend this dealership to anyone)
Anyway many many thanks for all your help and advice my kids will still have a mum tomorrow, if I hadn't known what to ask about I may have ended up in a collision. Thank you all so much.
I'll keep in touch and let you all know what happens.

Hi Jonna,
I never thought about it because I think I was just too upset at the time, I've since tried to check the history on my computer where I first learned that the car was for sale but I could only get todays history from it. So I'm not sure what to do. The other thing I remember being different after I bought the car was the mileage, It stated in the advertisement it had 47,000miles on the clock, after I'd bought it and checked the mot it had just over 50,000. I've been a right idiot I think he saw me coming. My friends and neighbours are sick too as I'd had to have the car jump started at least 5 times and today when the guy came out they were all absent, and who could blame them. I feel such a fool. but a lesson learned and never to be repeated. But I'm going to ring consumer protection tomorrow and see what they. And I'll let you know.

Im sorry 2 hear ur troubles but Fiats really arn't bad cars mines been nothing but a diamond has never let me down (touch wood) i do give it alot of stick and drive it hard. Definetly give that consumer protection a ring armed with facts and im sure the dealer will then fix all the probs with ur car and mayby even vallet it ;) hope u get it sorted.

Yes you must name and shame them to keep us all safe from the garage that ripped you off..[:(!]

Think carefully before embarking on a " name and shame " exercise.
There could be legal implications and it might give them something to use against you.
Rgds.

Hi everyone,
Well I've rang the garage about my car 9.10am and the receptionist informed me they moved to another part of the site yesterday and they are not hooked up to a telephone yet?????????
I asked if they could get a message to them she said she would do so straightaway. I waited........ at 9.45am I rang back and spoke to a guy called Scott who said he had delivered the message to the guy at the garage and he said they were going to ring me back straight away???????? Scott said he would go back and tell the guy who runs this outfit again.............still waiting........I can't name and shame this company because legally I don't know where I stand?????

10.25am and they've picked up the car. I informed the guy that he had informed me before I bought the car that it had been fully serviced and it was roadworthy, he said if thats what I said I can't remember but a service wouldn't pick up things like the battery or the alternator???????? I let vent. and informed him I could have been travelling on the road or a busy dual carriageway with my kids in the back of the car and ended up in a collision. He said, but the thing is it was driving when you left the garage. I then said, But it wasn't roadworthy was it? No reply. I asked him when I would get the car back he said he didn't know as it would have to be sent away so I asked him if he could ask his Dad (he runs the outfit) to ring me today to give me some idea of when I would get the car back. So I just have to wait again no offer of a replacement car or an apologie .nothing... I also told him because of all the probs I've had with the car it's only done 35 miles since 26/1/03. And I also informed him the car would have a full service when it came back and any further problems arising from the service I would take the matter further. But how much further I can take it I don't really know yet but I will keep you all informed. Back to the bus/metro/taxi for work, YUK.......

I would keep receipts of the buses and taxis you use in the future if you hav'nt already done so.
Write down what you have both said in your telephone converstions with times/dates/what they said they would do and hav'nt etc.
Also printout your posts on here showing you have expressed a concern and seeked advice and present it to a solicitor.
The first apointment should be free with them, what they will do is look at all the information you have collected and see wether you have a case against them. The beauty of this is if the solicitor thinks you have a strong enough case you can go 'No win no fee' in other words if you don't win you don't pay anything.
Have you the receipt from the sale of the car? Does it state wether its sold with a full service etc.
I would seriously consider doing this, BUT WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE YOUR CAR BACK! Don't want them to get all pissy and mess you about anymore. Oh and tell the solicitor you have kids and depend on the car.
Hope this helps.
