John MacAdam, fair play to him, by the end of the 19th century Most of the roads in Europe were constructed using the Macadamized System. But the English (E. Purnell Hooley) invented Tarmac in 1901 and how about Mr Percy Shaw of Yorkshire who gave us Cat’s Eyes.

In the 1820s Macintosh went into partnership with Hugh Birley, a cotton manufacturer from Manchester. During this time developed a waterproof material for raincoats.

John Boyd Dunlop, LEFT Scotland and lived in Ireland where he developed inner tubes for cycle tryes.

Rowland Hill (born Kidderminster, England) was the creator of the modern postal service. Through Hill's efforts, on May 6, 1840, Britain released the world's first officially issued adhesive postage stamp.

The first ever cycle race was held outside Paris in 1868. It was won by an Englishman (James Moore).

When the two navies of England and Scotland were combined in 1707 to become the British Royal Navy, the Scottish navy consisted of only 3 ships with The English navy having 277.

Although the Scotsman John Logie Baird is generally considered to be the creator of television, this would of course be an oversimplification of the truth, and to accept it as such would be to ignore the contributions of many others. Including a number of scientists in the US, France and good old England in 1923 who had progressed to the point where they were able to transmit shadows (is Hank Marvin really that old!!).

Didn’t Antonio Meucci invent the telephone?.

The first English translation of the entire Bible was by a priest, Miles Coverdale (born in Yorkshire), in 1535. The King James bible appeared in 1611. Isn’t Adam the first man to be mentioned in the bible?

Whiskey, Buckfast and Iron Bru are indeed fine drinks. But Don’t forget that Buckfast is attributed to French monks who settled at Buckfast Abbey in the 1880's in Devon and the Irish invented Whisky. You’ve got me on the Iron Bru!

Patrick Ferguson (1744-1780) improved Chaumette's breech loading mechanism invented during the 1500s, already used in sporting guns.

Originally noticed by a French medical student, Ernest Duchesne, in 1896. Penicillin was re-discovered by bacteriologist Alexander Fleming working at St. Mary's Hospital in London in 1928. It was an Australian scientist by the name of Howard Florey that transformed penicillin from an interesting observation into a life saver.

The Bank of England was founded by a Scot (William Paterson) who was born in Tynwald, Dumfriesshire but lived in England from childhood. The bank of Scotland was founded by an English man by the name of John Holland.
