Question RC Racing

Hi, this ones for you RC fans out there.

Me and a friend are thinking about getting a petrol RC car to do some racing.
Will be used for track and drift.

We dont have a massive budget, but what would people recomend as a starter?
Will probably be second hand one from fleebay or similar.

Re: RC Racing

HPI Racing are a decent brand. You thought of joining the local(ish) club?

http://www.trcc.org.uk/

They can help you with all sorts of questions and have a for sale area - might have something that tickles your fancy!

Re: RC Racing

You want sommat by Traxxas(American) best petrol rc's! Will it be off roading ?
Do you realise the costs in just pottering around with a SEMI decent RC ? Its one hell of an exspensive pastime and if youre properly racing its even more !! Its cheaper to run a real car , as you seem to spend more money each week on the RC than you do on your own motor!! (SERIOUSLY)

Re: RC Racing

What would be better for the drifting style?
Electric or Nitro?

Re: RC Racing

Probs nitro, you can have more power and larger cars. Obviously the electric ones will be cheaper (not cheap though!). I guess a lot depends on what tyres you fit and what surface you run on.

The racing I used to do was 1/10th tamiya foam on carpet. Some of the pro-modified class were amazing... Beat me by laps when I moved to their class

Re: RC Racing

Col7104, just found you post on the other thread.

Very helpful, cheers.

Think electric may be the way to go.

If using for drifting, how long would the motor/cell pack last? And what about tyres, every one seems to stick pieces of PVC pipe over the wheels. Although this would be cheap, does it really give the same effect?

Re: RC Racing

After way too many hours staring at my PC screen, i have come to a conclusion.

Im going to get a Tamiya TT-01/TT-01D.

Now its just a case of finding the cheapest place to get one from

Re: RC Racing

Hi,

the TT-01 is good for starting out on (strong, reliable, and reasonably competitive), but not what I would buy if you want to race. The spares availablity for Tamiyas is good, but not as widespread as some other choices. I race Schumacher for a number of reasons, but one of them is a very good spares availability. Their also British

Belt drive is the way to go for today's racing, however shaft drive does mean alot less maintenance, as the drivetrain is sealed. Open belt drives require more frequent maintenace due to their open nature. The general consensus nowadays is that belt is better than shaft due to matters such as torque steer.

For a starter electric kit, second hand I would look for a Xray Factory Kit. You should be looking at <£100 for a good condition one. Or new I would go for a Schumacher Mi2 at £149rrp for the S1 version.

Both cars have been superceded but spares are readily available, their strong, fully adjustable, and competitive.

Some would say the Xray is too adjustable and therefore a bit confusing. A little help from club members will counter that.

Unless you buy a rtr kit you need to factor in prices of other things such as:

- Cells £30-£60 here. Cheaper at the states, www.maxamps.com
- Charger £30-£250
- Motor £28 Stock £60 Mod, but not recommended for a starter
- Speed controller £20-£120 Price varies with motor limit
- Steering Servo £6-£110 Price varies with speed
- Transmitter and reciever package £40-£250
- Wheels and tyres £8-£15 a pair
- Pinion gear roughly £3

There's a wealth of other helpful bits and bobs but the above is what you would need to get going nicely.

If you have made your mind up on a budget and the type of racing you want to do (indoor/outdoor) then I will have a fish around for good prices and good gear.

Bear in mind that although the prices above look very steep, you don't need to spend anywhere near the upper limits to get going in RC. For years I raced on next to nothing (I used to get a fiver a week pocket money, if I was lucky), and I could reach the sharp end of the B final at regional events.

My advice at the moment is to get down to your local track and see if you like the atmosphere and get chatting to the guys. Also get onto rcracechat and have a good read. You'll learn alot.

Re: RC Racing

Ah ha, just read your post on the other forum. If you want to drift then the Yokomo drift package would be a nice simple place to start for a starter. It has everything you need for a good price. The bodyshells are also more detailed for that bling jap drifter look. New their like £40

I'm not all clued up on drifting though. I know the TT-01 is popular for drifting, so if other members who are more into it say that is better than that is likely to be correct. Any car can be drifted though. I used packing tape to turn my old Schumacher Mission into an effective drifter at racing once

Re: RC Racing

I got into racing with a 2wd TA01F which I bought for £1... Didn't win anything but I didn't come last either!

How about this for a pretty amazing set of wheels?

Re: RC Racing

RC never stops developing, that vid must be over 3 years old as it's an HPI Pro3!

Here's me at Southend at the recent STCC, I had nothing to do with that other guy crashing! :

Mine's the roange car, stupid photobucket vid is crap, so frame rate seems to have slowed, and quality is bad.

Re: RC Racing

I just re-sprayed my Impreza shell in matt black (paint on external surface) and it has chrome wheels... I'm gonna add some red neons and hopefully get some head/tail lights wired in. Then get some drift tyres... lol
