Re: The top 10 cars you hate...

It's intended for automatics, in America, where such systems are universal on large cars and where you keep your foot on the brake when at standstill and use the 'parking brake' when parked. Mercedes designed it to make their automatics more saleable in the States and everyone else had to put up with it.

I have an automatic and likewise only use the handbrake when parking, otherwise my foot stays on the footbrake when at standstill in traffic. Unless it's going to be a long wait of course.

Cars with start/stop systems you can't manualy shut of...
Last april this year, we drove a brandnew Chevrolet Malibu rental in Florida, and the damned thing died every traffic light to my annoyance, untill I discovered it was intended to do so...start/stop system....
Our new Alfa Giulietta has a similar system, but it is permanent shut down by pressing a button once...

I've got nothing against them if they aren't designed by an idiot..

The Citroen will idle until the tank is empty despite having stop start, but you put it in neutral and lift the clutch it stops immediately and starts immediately when you press the clutch again. It is 100% predictable and therefore useful...the ones that cut out when they feel like it on the the other hand are a menace.

@Liquid Knight: I'd agree with most of your post, and I have something to add to the VW Golf bit, and it is as follows:

Audi.

When they launched the X-Type, Jaguar were shot down in flames for making a car based on the Mondeo, yet in principle, what Jaguar did was no different to most Audis for the last 20 years, if not far longer. Not only are the A1, A3, TT, Q3, A4, A5, Q5 and Q7 based on common VW platforms, but a lot of the components used are similar if not identical to those used in bargain basement Seats and Skodas, and all yours for rip off prices, lol!

What makes it even more laughable is the sheer arrogance and snobbishness of audi drivers, lol!

Fiat group also do exactly the same thing a prime example being the more expensive mito, being a re-hashed grande.

The reason Jaguar were so badly criticized was that they were building a new "premium" car on an out going much older cheaper mk2 ford mondeo platform.

So when the X-type was launched it was being sold along side the Mk3 mondeo which had see a complete redesign and had a much better newly developed platform. So the more expensive jaguar didn't drive anywhere near as well as the mondeo from the same era
If you went and looked at some of the cars mentioned above you'll know there is a huge quality difference between an Audi or a skoda and they deliberately spend much more time and money on development of the more expensive cars while a cheaper brand is much more rough around the edges.

compare a model like the Up/citigo/mii you'll see that there is very little in the quality of the different cars and you'll also notice there is little difference in the price between equivalent models.

Again a well designed system will not use the battery and barely if at all use the starter motor. They will have a capacitor specifically for their purposes and either use a reversible alternator and/or use the starter motor in conjunction with stopping the engine in the perfect place to restart.

At the Alfa Stelvio launch this week someone suggested it won't be as good as the Audi Q-whatever.

I said...

"Audi is for people who's neighbors already have a VW".

...and that's about all I have to say about them.

I do prefer the RS5 six speed manual, N/A 4.2 V8 and mechanical torque vectoring to the Nissan GTR's plug in and play turbo V6 and brake interfering electronic torque vectoring set up. It feels less artificial and more like you're driving than a passenger to a computer.

Re: The top 10 cars you hate...

Audis are a joke to be honest. The A4 is a tranny version of the Passat dressed in drag. If anybody is stupid enough to spend so much more on one (or any Audi) thinking they're getting any sort of advantage over a mediocre, bland VW they're mistaken. Maybe Audi is Better quality because instead of chrome dipped plastic it's got aluminium rings around the air vents ;-)

Fiat may well share platforms but there's still not much of a jump on the prices. You're not talked into the whole 'premium' factor. At least with a Fiat or Alpha you're getting style and value.

German cars are amongst the poorest IMO due to their over engineering. That is perhaps their expertise. In the real world where people have bills to pay for more important things it means half their cars and technologies don't Deserve to exist. Let's face it, real premium cars over 50,000 and 100,000 are rarely Audis/VAG's - people with that money have taste

I am a little overly harsh with the 156 because it had to follow the 155 and was completely outgunned by the 159

It was Alfa's attempt at making a "normal" car when anybody and everybody knows that's the last thing Alfa Romeo should try and do.

If I had to buy a new car three of my top five choices would be Alfa Romeo.

Despite the fact I'm supposed to be at a charity track day today but my Spider decided both it's clutch cylinders didn't need seals at the same time.

Drivers aids have their place and don't get me wrong I appreciate all the statistics and everything else but, the standard of driving is falling as drivers aids are getting better.

When I first started being interested in cars things like ABS and power steering were luxury items. Now most driving school cars have more gizmos and gadgets than a space shuttle and as new drivers can not afford a new car with all that crap their twenty year old Vauxhall Corsa end up in a ditch.

Nothing special. Bugatti is definitely over engineered.

The Italians do it better
