Even Skodas are starting to lose their competitiveness: they used to be a decent car at a good price, but the latest Fabia and Octavia have generic, bland styling, and from what I understand, they aren't even that cheap to buy anymore.

Skodas are not cheap anymore - that was the whole benefit a few years back, when VW engineered it's cars properly you could get the same engineering but at a far lower price. Now, they compete above the price range of Fords, Vauxhall etc - mind you Kia/Hyundai are doing this to.

Skodas used to actually be really quite nice cars, just possibly with less toys. With regards to Hyundai and Kia, they are also starting to make genuinely nice cars, but as you say, the prices are rising. Personally, i find the idea of Dacias quite appealing.

Hmm an old Renault with no galvanizing..what's not to like?

Tbf I have nothing against VW, they just built anything of note for a long time. They do have a top class marketing though, it'll have to be used to rebuild it's reputation rather than convincing people to pay more for average..

I'm sure Dacias are rustproofed, lol!

I also reckon that VAG have engineered it so the right front day running light fails, the amount I see where they are not working especially UP's on newish cars is a lot..

Haha I think Fiat do this with the 500 DRL's as well!
All of ours have failed and the hatch to replace them. Well. You'd need a microscope to change the bulb. And a car jack. And the wheel off.
