I'm thinking of heading to see Wales Rally GB this year and was wondering if it's worth the ticket price and standing in a forest in November?

There are many free events around the UK throughout the year, but I'm wondering if it's worth going to one of the bigger (possibly biggest) rally events.

Any tips, or experiences good or bad would be great! (y)

Would love to answer you, but my experience is horribly out of date.
Standing in forests when the British round of the rally championship went all round the UK day and night. Started on a Sunday and finished several days later.
You had to phone up a special number on the landline (what else??) to get a "Lombard RAC Rally report" and find out who was leading and who had crashed on a 27 mile long stage in Clocaenog Forest in the dark!
Happy days - Mikkola, Blomqvist, Vatanen, Airrikala,Tony Pond, Waldegard, Andy Dawson, Jimmy McRae...I could go on.
Sometimes too many people would turn up and / or the approach the roads got blocked so the stage got cancelled ! Aaaagh!
Wonderful times.
My advice would be to go for it, and come on here after and tell us all about it.

My experiences were like yours,pooroldcodger.

I still have my self-shot VHS tapes of RS200s,Quattros,Mazda 323 4x4s,Galants, 205T16s etc etc blasting thru stages in the mist at places like Clumber Park-- and even Dragonby Mines at Scunthorpe!

Ah, if only the RAC rally was back- when rallying was fantastic, interesting and truly challenging, unlikee today's tame cars, and tame short re-run stage

I suppose the 3 stages a day, each run twice, must make spectating easier though...............

My experience is more up to date but might still be well out of date.

I was unfortunate enough to be spectating the Margam Park stages on the 2005 Rally, let's just say it wasn't the happiest of days. If anyone doesn't know what I'm referring to, google it.

Pick your stage carefully, we were told our tickets were good for one stage location only i.e. we were there the whole day. We picked Margam because we thought there would be a good chance of seeing the cars winding down the hillside.

I lived in south Wales when the Rally was organised and run from Cardiff, so I usually went and saw the starting and finishing ceremonies and I saw the super special stage when it was in the Millennium Stadium.

To be fair, I experienced a lot of the memorable stuff away from the stages, like watching the Citroen guys lock one of the their lady colleagues in a portaloo by putting it up against a nearby barrier after winning the rally and the championships one year; getting Tommi Makinen's autograph during his last ever WRC rally with the aid of a really tall Dutch bloke; Valentino Rossi signed an autograph for me, then used my pen to sign everyone else's, then came back to return it to me.

You might also consider the National rally that runs at the same time too.
