putting this up as im at a loss how to get rid of a green algae that's trying to take over all the ni and ph levels are mostly spot on its
its a fresh water tank no plants in it, every one says its because the tank is near a window but for the last 2 weeks ive covered the tank up and just had the lights on half power to kill it off , is there a way to raise some level for a while that will kill the plants and spores and not harm the fish
its like hair algae but grows longer

I used to have a couple of plecs in mine, was interesting to watch them cleaning the algae off the glass.
My lounge window is North facing & not a huge amount of natural light gets in, plus the tank was set into an alcove.

If it was the summer month's I'd blame the natural light. Is your tank lamp UV? maybe get a bulb that's none UV and limit the use of your UV one.

I'd say it's a lack of "bottom" feeders in the tank. Sounds like you need some plecs or similar to eat it all and stop it over growing :).

You defo need some sucker / bottom feeders.

To kill it off chemically will almost defo kill the fish. Remove as much as you can by hand (making sure your hands haven't touched any scented / cleaning products for several hours - rinse your hands with water and shake them off before putting hands in tank). Use non scented kitchen roll to wipe the insides of the tank and remove anything that is covered in algea and scrub with a hard plastic brush that's not used for anything else - make sure your filter is clean and working.

You say fresh water, is it tropical or cold water?

you will need to improve water flow in your tank...
i had marine fish and coral tanks for many years
just feed less, cut your lights and put more water flow...
