Before you read any further its NOT about a car..

feel free to ignore this post now haha

anyways, i need to restore an old garden bench, for my mother, it has great sentimental value to her and i know it would bring her much joy to see it in a useable condition again :)

its got wooden slats, some hard wood presumably, anyways, over the years, the wood has cracked/broken, and the iron surface has rusted away.

so what wood would you suggest useing? reading online iv come up with oak, or teak. both i dont have a clue where to get. oh and pine, which is available in b&q.

thats the main concern. i can bring metal back to life, i can cut to size ect ect i just need some advice on what wood to use as it will spend all the time outside, probs only get treated once a year if that.

if anyone could help i would be greatly appreciative!

No problem with using pressure treated pine from b&q then varnish or paint as desired.

The metal will clean up with a wire brush on a drill then, again repaint as needed, with Hammerite or similar which has rust preventing agents in it

Thanks :) everywhere I read said to avoid pine but pine seems good enough for ikea so pine it is! Whats that hammerite straight to rust like? Can you get something similar in different colours? The metal back rest has sunflowers on, ovbs would love to paint them traditional yellow!

bad idea, never paint over rust, it just keeps reacting underneath

never used hammerite, for much

im a steel fabricator and have seen rust come through a coat of

and 2 coats of decent black

I'd go with a good coat of a zink paint
and then paint how ever you like.
did a salt water test with an ion exchange spray for 2 months previously and saw no sign of degradation

thought about gold leaf on the sun flower?

also thought about shot blasting the frame?
