What about the 75?

Contrary to what people believe the 75 was not based on a binned BMW 3 series FWD platform.

The 75 was an all new car when designed and launched. Rover had already started development of it before BMW took over.

When Rover were looking for a new Diesel engine they tried various engines, even the 1.9 multi jet found its way into a prototype, however the joint venture with Fiat was binned because Fiat wanted to much money for the units.

When BMW took over the rear suspension from the 3 series was adapted and put into the 75 as did the 2.0 diesel.

I knew it wasn't a BMW platform, but was it rovers' own?

If memory serves correctly, I believe the BMW 2.0 diesel also found its way into the freelander.

It had the old L series engine to begin with and then gained the BMW engine.

Just before Rover went under they had developed their own common rail L series engine that was quieter than the BMW engine.

Obviously I'm approximately 45 years too young to drive a rover, but it is a shame that they went bust, and had become such a joke.

I think the mk3 200/25 used rover engines, a solely rover body, a solely rover dashboard, the only part I'm unsure of is the platform.

Platforms were carry overs from the Civic/Concerto days.

The last model 200 (25) was a new shell with a hotch-potch of bits from other cars bolted on, including bits from the last 200 which was jointly designed with Honda, but these were old parts and didn't work together in the new car very well making it a bit of a pig, reliability was shocking and rover started swapping bits about to try and create some semblance of a half decent car, they even pulled bits out of the old metro parts bin (the 200 was supposed to do away with the metro) in the end they went bust before managing to sort out all the problems, and being so far behind didn't help rover on the sales side of things either

Make no mistake though no rover is a Honda and nothing built by rover in the last 15 years is remotely comparable

On YouTube, there's a Top Gear clip from 1995 showing Quentin Willson roadtesting the 200, and he loved it!!

After thinking about it mum has decided she doesn't want the rover after all :) the punto may have over 140,000 miles on it but is still going strong so she's going to keep it for now :D ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1433804248.769453.jpg
