Evening all. Im planning on getting a new car (fiat) soon but am unsure on how the best way of transferring my private plate over from my current car. I will be selling the car privately (very low p/x value) once ive bought something new.

Option 1 -
remove the private plate from my current car and hold it on retention. Assign private plate to new car once bought. Sell old car.
I think this will cost me £130 in total. (£25+£80+£25)

Option 2 -
Buy new car. Transfer private plate directly from old car to new car. Sell old car£80 transfer fee.
Do any of you know if this option will be possible as my old car will no longer be insured?

Any advice from your own experience would really be appreciated guys :)

Personally I would go route one purely for peace of mind although I think you only need the plate to be transferred off an MOT'd vehicle to achieve route 2.

I think that might be the best option too scout. Just a shame it'll cost much more

Option 1 will be £105, £80 for plate transfer and £25 for retention for up to 12 months.

Option 2 is what I've always done, if you're not selling the original vehicle straight away it'll save you £25, you'll then just have to wait for the replacement V5C to come through before selling it.

Donor vehicle doesn't have to be MOTed or insured, just has to be either taxed, or SORN for no more than 12 months since last valid tax.

No there isn't, that's what the £80 is for ;)

Hmm :). I thought it was this -

£105 to hold the plate on retention for a year

£25 when I want to assign the plate to my new car. Surely this can't be free! :p
I'm just basing that on what I've found on the gov.uk website, V62 form

Nope, it's £80 to transfer, you can transfer straight to another vehicle (£80), or £25 in addition to this to retain it for 12 months. Hence £105 (£80+£25).

You've already paid your £80 transfer fee when it goes onto retention, you don't pay this twice.

£80 is a transfer fee
£25 a 12 month retention fee

Oh nice one! Cheaper than I initially thought then. I didn't realise that £25 retention fee included transferring it onto another car

Thanks for your help :)
