It was definitely red tarmac with a pic of a bike on it. Even the builder in his pickup (beside me) commented on it

Having found rule 178, did you read all of it? It goes on:
"If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area."
This happens with learners, as they move away slowly, having crossed the first line, the lights go amber, they hesitate, then it goes red and the instructor will stop the car.
It has happened to me twice, when traffic ahead is waiting to turn, as the traffic moves, the lights changed. So I stopped in the marked area. Embarrassing, as no-one else will understand, will they, but absolutely the right thing to do.

I've just emailed this youtube link to my smallest kids school secretary. Iv'e asked her to include it in the weekly email/newsletter.
Some parents in the school think its above them to park 100m away and walk.
I see childminders and other parents nigh on everyday having to walk on the road pushing buggies whilst the cars are parked on the pavement.
I feel like keying the lot of them!
Maybe some stealth brake fluid in a water pistol??

This guy was behind me on the approach. As the road split into three lanes, he came past on my inside & just managed to stop at the red light - on the red tarmac. I had already stopped outside of this area, on the amber light (I was always taught it meant stop as well (if safe to do so)). He must have seen the lights change on his side AND the ones facing.
I do appreciate that you can get stuck in this area if going through the junction & everything suddenly stops - but this guy was actively trying to beat the lights.
I now know why he didn't go through on red - recently found out that this is one of the cctv monitored junctions with red light cams as well due to the high number of incidents.

Can't agree with Sludgeguts (again!) ABS and fat tyres won't stop you "on a sixpence" on ice. I hit a patch earlier this year at low speed, barely touched the brakes and locked up all four wheels, the car just carried on with no ABS judder. I think it thought it had stopped! If you class the ABS, wheel speed analysis algorithm as "thinking".

I must say as a younger driver these are all very informative and quite useful reminders for the little things we can forget or the bad little habits we get into whilst driving. Although I do wish people would stop criticising young drivers, we're not all bad its only those who are idiots that give drivers under say 25 a bad name. I watched all three parts of Candles for Katie and despite learner drivers not being taught properly these days I was taught everything included in that video (and more obviously) and it served as a good reminder of some of the things I've gotten into bad habits with (as always nobody is a perfect driver)
I was taught to drive almost 3 years ago, so I have very little real experience and by now I should've killed myself and all my friends going by what most people think of young drivers however I'm hopefully soon to earn my second years NCB, I've never had a bump or a scrape (touch wood ) and I don't drive a modern car that gets me out of tricky situations easier, I drive an archaic Panda with brakes about as strong as cheese, no electronic aids and no power steering...

Didge3 - have a listen to BBC4 at 12 noon tomorrow. (y)

See if you recognise my name. ;)

As a young driver thats getting on now - nearing the 25 in the not to distant future

I can say - I've got a clean licence, and clean insurance!
So much so - i actually bring my otherhalf's insurance down! (SCORE!)

Not all - but i was tar'd with the same brush that all young drivers are idiots

I wasn't really saying you could, you took a few words out of context...
"
Maybe we don't see these clips anymore because cars of today are far superior?
After all, when driving on sheet ice, things like abs and brake assist will still stop you on a sixpence, especially combined with tyres that are half as wide again as they used to be - and let's not forget the far superior rubber used, along with the hyper-technical, computer-designed, advanced tread patterns."

I can only assume that many drivers with all these 'superior' devices/attributes on their cars feel they can simply ignore the laws of physics. Hence the vid - why drive headlong into thick fog?

30 years' clean licence and clean insurance aside from 3 non-fault claims in the last decade - but seemingly, these are still 'claims'

In other words, despite my record being unblemished, the industry still feels that i was somehow still to blame for making them get off their backsides and chase the guilty party on my behalf.
If the OH puts me on her insurance, it goes UP

interestingly, when my youngest went for renewal, he found it was dearer to put me on - but when he put his GF's parents on, it went down dramatically - they own their own taxi business & both have points as well as insurance claims in the last 3 years.

I'm not sure I'm allowed? Isn't it for the 75 and over aged only ;)
You young whippersnapper. You're not to big to be put over my knee and given a damned good spanking you know and......er......will that end up with me being placed on the Sex Offenders Register? Yes well, perhaps not.

Non-fault claims are still counted against you, but not as highly. A view is taken that you were in a place where you got caught, whereas many of us manage not to be caught, so you are seen as higher risk.

With any collision involving more than one vehicle, someone got something wrong, but could the other person have seen it coming, or done anything to prevent the collision? Often the answer is yes, so the insurance companies are happy to penalise you, as its more profit for them if then you don't get caught.

Surely, that is something the other insurance company will be looking for in order to wriggle out of paying everything - a way of reducing their portion of the payout by assigning a percent to the other party.
Because of my first two non-faults, I bit the bullet & bought a dashcam. The footage proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that i was innocent and that there was no way on earth i could've seen it coming - certainly there was absolutely no mention of any blame being apportioned during or after the claim process - but it's only now, when I am asked if i had a claim, I say "no" and they say - "but what about XXX ?"

In which case, maybe I should just take my chance at not being insured like the other few hundred thousand drivers out there?

Bloody insurance companies must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Watching all those old PIF's has just ended up in a whole lost afternoon in a downward you tube Spiral

There should be a PIF warning of the dangers of this
There is help available. Simply PM me and we can arrange a time when you can place a Jiffy Bag full of used £20 & £50 notes behind a phone box at a mainline rail station.

That way you will have to sell your computer and your newly discovered addiction will go away.

Sorted.

You can thank me later, but don't make a big fuss, it'll just be embarrassing

The parking and joining the motorway films are just as relevant today as they were then. There seems to be a fairly widespread belief that traffic already on the carriageway must give way to those joining, when of course it's the other way round.

As for parking, Eric Pickles the Communities Secretary (I think) has said that people should be allowed to park on Double Yellow Lines for a short time, perhaps around 10 minutes. Unfortunately, most people are oblivious to an interpretation of John Donne's (15 something or other - 16 something or other) famous saying that "No man is an island" and will just stick their car at the side of the road and go and get a paper or a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread.

"I'll only be a minute". Unfortunately, the two or three people ahead of him aren't really getting a move on and they take a couple of minutes each so Mr. "I'll only be a minute" turns into Mr. "I'll only be 5 minutes". Not a problem you might think, except that on the A57 Hyde Road into Manchester at rushhour that can be a problem. We recently estimated that cars were passing along there at the rate of one vehicle every 2 seconds.

On that basis, roughly 15 per minute in each lane which means that when lane 1 is blocked by a parked car, for 1 minute, that was 15 cars, trucks, vans and buses all trying to get into lane 2. Which means that lane 2 slows down almost to a crawl in order to let them out; which in turn means that speed goes down to about 5 mph. Then when Mr. "I'll only be a minute" returns to his car.....he can't get in it because of all the traffic squeezing past.

But then if you take the fact that he's metamorphosed into Mr. "I've only been 5 minutes" means that the queue to get past his steed is now about 200 yards long, with another 15 vehicles a minute bearing down on him.

But then, he was only going to be a minute.
