I was reliably informed today by a garden equipment guy that some 2013 saws now have a catalyst fitted. Considering how little emissions these things produce on a global scale is this regulation gone mad ?

How long will it be before these end up in the scrap pile as being uneconomical to repair - five years perhaps ?

hat about all the emissions / pollution / non green whatever involved in making a new one ? Bet you that far outweighs a non catalysed machine's lifetimes worth of exhaust emissions......says he with three 60's Jonsereds that still work just fine.

Small engines such as chainsaws, generators and lawn mowers are among the dirtiest. If you hook them up to an MOT exhaust analyser the readings for CO2 and HCs will go higher than most old cars. So it makes a bit of sense to try to clean them up.
The catalyst is recyclable as the precious metals used will be valuable and can be reprocessed and reused.

Indeed, but at what cost does the hapless owner replace the thing ?

I used to work in forestry a little, not an expert but bloke I worked for was complaining about these simply because they lack power so have shorter bars to compensate.

The reality is that wharever survives the legal 2yrs period is a success. The ages of Husqvarna 162 are over. I recently tried to get spares for +/- 10 yrs old blue ("Professional") Bosch drill. Available, but ridiculous prices. Scrapped it.
