right, ive found sumfin in america that i like and want to buy, they worth £215 pounds and i want to get them posted over here, only thing stoppin me is import tax etc, does anyone know what the prices/limits are on weight etc and how it works.

also i was told that to avoid this to get the sender to lie and write that they worth way less than actually are therefore wont have to pay as much if even on import tax,

thanks, please advise.

If it is obvioulsy more than a certain value, I don't think you can put it down as a gift. It is also a little risky as it is illegal and evading customs & excise is a very serious offence.

I am not sure but I think the amount of VAT etc depends on the product. You will also probably have to pay a clearing charge to the courier company.

Best to check out some courier websites and see what the rules are.

we bought a stereo off ebay that cost 200 and they told us if the item was check (i think 1 in 4 are opened and checked?) then we would have to pay £60 - £15 customs charges and the rest was tax.

They didnt check it and we didnt have to pay anthing. It just depends i think :)

The Import tax and VAT rate does vary on what youre importing.

You might have to pay import tax and VAT.

Is it these wheels?

Import tax is one pain in the arse... i know its off the subject slightly but i looked at bringing a dodge viper over to britain and wondered about what costs it would be this is what it would...

Car £25,000 approx
Metal Container Storage and Ship £700
Insurance 5% of total cost = £1285

Now this is what pee'd me off

Import tax 10% of Total goods (car/P&P/ins) £2698.50
VA Bloody T 17.5% on (total goods inc I/Tax) £5194.61

Totalling £34878.11 for a car worth approx £25,000 so Britain gets £9000 that wasnt even anything to do with Rip Of Britain ... there goes my dream

yeah its wheels, but each one be in a seperate box with probably the persons home address as return address, so could you get away with sending as a gift because they have no buisness address to track back too??

goods are worth about £335 which inc. courier charge so would tax if i had to be that expensive?

about £787 if tax and import tax where charged at rates that was said?

As far as I know, the difference between Merchandise and Gifts is that the tax-free limit for Merchandise is £18, and £36 for Gifts - so not much good for shipping wheels.

For smaller items, such as CDs/DVDs, you often get away with it but sometimes get caught out (and stung with a collection charge as well, guess how I know this...) - don't know how many obviously bigger and more expensive packages get checked.

New Viper? If its more than 6mths old, its VAT exempt (or at least a lower rate)

could do but they only are allowed 1 car tax free to import each way (one when they arrive in the UK, and one when they finally leave). So they can take one car from the US to the UK and one UK/European car Back.

Ye a new one, was wanting to see what i'd need to save up for. As for the VAT its a shame to fill up our kitty to give to other nations and to give peeps benefits, al stop there though cause it'll get too political :p

Note: Some unscrupulous overseas suppliers openly advertise on the internet, or on their web-sites that they will deliberately either misdescribe items or underdeclare their value in order to evade customs charges that are legally due on importation. You should be aware that although the foreign sender may have completed the customs declaration form on the parcel you are regarded (in law) as the importer of the goods and responsible for the information on the declaration, and any customs charges that may be due. This means that if you purchase goods from these suppliers and the declaration is found to be false or misleading you may be liable to financial penalties or criminal prosecution. Furthermore the goods themselves will be liable to forfeiture. It is in your own interests to ensure Customs declarations are completed properly.
