Can someone recommend me a good cycling shoe to go with Shimano pedals ?

its personal
EG I wear 9/10s in shimanos, but some are a bit narow
especially for your 1st pair.
go to the shops and try a load for fit
remember to key in what socks you will wear
if its thin summer ones then fine.however if you need space for thicker winter ones then nsure you have space

Your probabley "The Forum Cyclist" and Shimano's are your choice so I think I'll go with Shimano for my first cycling shoe. I tried on some Shimano SH-R087 road shoes with Shimano SPDR-SL cleats, they were a good fit, more comfortable than I expected and compatible with the pedals I purchased so I'll go back the weekend and buy them. Thanks (y)

Nothing wrong with Shimano at all..... Bar most are not really made with the uk conditions in mind silly mesh toes and such like :dead:

The Shimano SH-R087 have some mesh for ventilation but they're mainly leather(or something that looks like leather). I thought mesh was a good thing to have so why do you think its bad in the UK? If the weather is bad surely over shoes would be an option.

British weather even a slightly damp road = loads of spray and wet toes  Overshoes do work but ..... they make you look even more of a idiot than Lycra shorts :D

The neoprene over shoes I looked at where pretty cool looking, funky colours and patterns on them.

Have to agree about the Lycra though. I wear baggy cycling shorts, like the sort of thing skateboarders wear.

My LAS Squalo helmet is an unusual looking necessity.

My missus brought me some Pro Shimano Equipe gloves which I like. Good job I do as she'd make me wear them just because she brought them ..

float gives a degree of movement whilst clipped in
with a tight set up,it can lead to pain/discomfort in areas like the knee with the foot being locked in place
however some dont like the feel and prefer a more locked in feel.
again, this will boil down to personal preference and whether your body/injuries is happy being locked in if you go no float.
I personally like little/no movement, though I have to be careful of an old ankle injury

So "in layman's terms" the more float a cleat has the looser the fit between my foot and the pedal ?

For example, 2 degree's of float would feel tighter(more solid) than 6 degree's of float ?

If that's correct, I'm thinking I should order a cleat with 6 degree's of float due to the fact I've never used cleats before and a reasonable amount movement(float) may help until I get used to them. What do you think ?

Just ordered a pair of Shimano SM-SH11 cleats(6 degree's of float). So I'll be fitting my new pedals this afternoon.

custard Thanks for your help.

Mine came with Shimano pedals with SPD on one side and alloy platform.....sort of.....thingys on the other so I can ride them with cleats or trainers. Works well for me.

I bought some Shimano SH-M122B shoes. They were about £40 as opposed to the (I think) £60-something they should have been. They were my first clip in shoes so I had nothing to compare them with.

At that price they're obviously not going to be up there with the best as they're made of a synthetic leather with three velcro straps, but to begin with they'll do. I buy some Gaernes next pay day.....or maybe not.

I'm not a seasoned cyclist, far from it, just ride for fun usually. However, this is my first road bike and I intend to take things a little more seriously. Don't know much about them apart from what I've learnt here and google. My purchases for a road setup have been recommended or from reviews I've read.

My Boardman Team road bike was recommended by a friend and came at the right price. My Las Squalo helmet was a bargain from eBay. My Shimano 105 pedals, Shimano R087 shoes and SH-11 cleats from speaking to other forum members and as a bouns I found them all in a sale. The shoes were only £65 from Cycle Sports UK.

I've not yet used it all as I only fitted the new pedals this evening. Need to buy some new base layers before I take it all for a "proper" test so an evening mid week will probabely be the earliest I get to take it for a spin. I just hope I don't get saddle sore and no punctures.

Float is the amount of rotation when you peddle your legs go up and down and your hips rotate slightly moving your feet.... imagine you heel going out as you push down and in as your foot rises.......

you need to work out the angle of the dangle...

sit on a bar stool and hang your legs down... look at your toes if they point in you want to off set your cleats so they point outwards slightly so the cleats sit straight on the bike.......

Well it had to happen eventually, I fell off.

I was out riding with 3 friends Friday and we decided to race downhill along a one way winding section of the road near a friends house.

A pedestrian with a dog allowed it to step out infront of my friend at the front causing him to crash. My friend right behind him rode into him and he crashed to. I came around the corner to see the carnage, swerved and managed to miss them but was traveling to fast for the next bend, panicked, hit the brakes too hard and slid 20 foot down the asphalt(was probabely much less but it felt like 2 miles). This removed a couple of layers of skin from my right butt cheek and injured my wrist.

My bike suffer no damage at all but one of my R087 cycling shoes had part of its ratchet ripped off. Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

I'll put the kettle on then.

The chances of me sliding down the road for 20 feet is about as close to zero as it's possible to get. I generally ride at a speed that means I can stop in about 6' just by putting my feet on the ground.

I know the feeling, this overweight, middle aged lump cruises at around 12mph and normally I do about 20 mile a day (unless on the Downs Link) coz it's hilly round here :D
