Red Arrows death

they said on the news the hawk is designed with an ejector system that'll work when the aircraft is on the ground.

Perhaps it was set off by accident? Perhaps before the pilot was buckled in?

Terrible tragedy, especially so soon after loosing another member of the team. RIP.

From what ive heard through family and friends in the RAF (Based at Waddington near Scampton), the pilot was buckled in and its believed to be electrical fault with the firing mechanism, that means the rockets went off but didn't trigger the canopy explosives.

If you look at the images of the hawk the canopy (cockpit cover) hasnt blown off.. the entire frame should come away, but the glass is broken. seems like a TopGun style incident.

Its such a sad time, espicially since they only did the memorial for the other pilot the week before :(

Theres people questioning if the red arrows should go on.. But considering they are the best in their career they deserve all the credit they can get. Its not a safe job, considering every stunt they do, i have nothing but respect for them

Lets face it, the Hawk T1 that the RA's use are OLD!! They are the only section of the RAF using the T1's now that the rest are using the newer T2's

There are no canopy explosives on the T1. This due to them being able to eject whilst at low level (on the ground). My step dad is a fireman at Scampton and was there andis a bit shook up about it. He hasn't said anything about it as obviously not allowed to.

"While HSA had wanted to use the new lightweight Folland-Saab "Mark 4GT" ejection seats, the RAF specified the bigger and heavier Martin-Baker "Mark 10B" rocket boosted zero-zero ejection seats to maintain commonality with other RAF aircraft. The larger Martin-Baker seats required a slight fuselage stretch from the original paper design to permit their accommodation. The canopy is side-hinged, and is taped with miniature detonation cord to shatter it before ejection." fighter-planes.com

Seems to point to tech fault with the Martin-Baker seat – some reports of seat punching-out but `chute not deploying. Not familiar with procedures – but surely unlikely to have accidently triggered seat climbing in/out … safety pins still I place(?) Then if buckled-in & pins out and still on the flight-line – what event would cause the pilot to deliberately activate seat?

:yeahthat:

Exactly right.

Apparently problem with the seat itself, only effects the Hawks though, the company are looking into changing their design.
