Bleach may do it :). Although it will just come back.

It does indeed. You really need to sort the source of the excess moisture or any things within the house which are making it worse. We had a bit of damp in our bathroom. The big problem was the fact that it had woodchip on the walls which just sucked moisture in. There were patches of mould that you could get rid of with bleach and a scourer, but in a few months they were back.

Since then we've had the bathoom redone, the walls and floors tiled and the ceiling clad and there's nowhere for the mould to grow other than the grout, but being that the room is all tiled and clad, the walls don't hold moisture in anymore like they used to.

The one thing I always disagree with people about doing is opening windows when it's cool outside to let cool air in. All this does is reduce the amount of moisture that the air can hold and cause more moisture to condence on walls and so on. Moisture condensing on walls = mould.

Every winter people with 500's complain about the inside of their windscreens icing up. This is only a problem for people who heat the inside of their car up like the tropics which just means that the air in the car can hold more moisture which when you've parked the car up in the evening, condenses on the windows and then of course freezes.

From the point of view as a landlord I've got a few questions for you...

Have you notified your landlord in writing about the damp?

Have you attempted to clean the mould at any point? If not why not?

I have used a proper mould and mildew cleaner to get rid of it.

The landlord has been round for three seperate meetings, all he's done is put a vent in the wall.

I'm handing in my notice to him today.

What a tool (the landlord). That mould is not going to be sorted by simply putting a vent in the wall. Sadly he'll probably just bleach the walls and the next person who moves in will have the same problem. I really really hope that you report him.

I am no expert but this looks far more than condensation to me. Galloping damp more like, not rising damp. I would suspect the river or some active water course somewhere is at fault I am amazed you have put up with it for so long. As you are leaving anyway you are probably going to struggle to get anything back, but just hope you get your deposit back ok.
Best of luck chum. You've been taken advantage of in a big way and that annoys me.
