having no luck with my 3gs,it wont restore never mind update! keeps coming up with 1394 error
im running 4.2.1 btw
any help apreciated.

Is that phone capable of going that high?

yeah the 3gs and the 4 are compatible. few have done it on the 3gs. it says new ios 5.0 is available for update when i connect to itunes

Definitely error 1394? I was getting 3194 yesterday but I sorted it out.


For 1394, you want to make sure the device is in DFU mode before attempting to restore it. If you don't know how to do this, there are many guides online.

Give me a bit more info and I might be able to help you. Have you ever jailbroken before? What are you trying to restore to? Is it stock iOS 5 downloaded from apple themselves?

Hi mate,yeah 1394.
i havent jailbroken before as it didnt need it as i bought it on o2.When i go to update to ios 5 it says backing up and restoring,then when it tries to update it gets to the end of the scroll bar and says cannot restore.

Tried it tonight on the gf's laptop running windows 7 and it seems stuck on backing up iphone :/

Just out of interest how come you're restoring it? Why don't you just click on the update button? I always use restore but that's because I use custom firmwares for jailbreaking and unlocking. With a phone I don't need jailbroken I've always just used the update button instead

i do. i always click update and it starts the process and get to the end and says cant restore etc

NOW the bloody thing has malfunctiond! Usb wont work on the comp now! and it wont charge! Had it with this phone!!

ive posted on apple's discussion and have had no replies on there!

Sounds dodgy, it must be the phone then, either that or the USB cable.. I've fixed 100s of iPhones in my time but I've never actually come across the 1394 error myself

well the phone is dead now,battery is flat
the usb lead wont work/connect with the phone so unsure what to do as cant turn it on to try and sort it

a neighbour is going to look at it see if he can get it to turn on.
but yeah was 1394 and according to the apple's faq code's 1394 isnt compatible to update,weird

right well after 2 days,we borrowed another cable and wham bam it switched on! it is possible for lead to randomly stop working? it charges via the comp (now recognises the phone) and in the house.

havnt bothered trying to update to ios5 as ill only get stressed with it

Yeah it's possible, I've had it happen before. 1394 is hardware related so could have just been the cable on its way out.

the cable that came originally in the box kinda snapped (caught under the chair lol) so purchased a cheap 1 for £2 off ebay,only had it 3 month.Weather it was genuine or not i dont know as you couldnt tell between it and my sisters original one that i borrowed.

i tried searchin 1394 and said something about it not being able to process it.But if you say it was hardware related then maybe it could have been down to the cable like you say?

Tried updating once again to ios5.0 and yet again it crashed on 'backing up iphone',hour and hald it was stuck on that.Using windows 7 aswell.
Last time i used my lappy (vista) it backed up,restored then the error came up so unsure whats goin on.

Yeah you do get a lot of 'replica' cables, some good, some bad.

My recommendation is to start a fresh, sync your phone with the computer you usually sync it with. Then follow a guide to put your phone into DFU mode, plug it into a different computer, click restore (your only option), and let iTunes download iOS5 from scratch and install it on the phone.

tbh i think i do remember my neighbour saying put it into dfu mode first and restore it and do it that way.

just tried it and your right,it was error 3194..tried it on my comp this time and it didnt crash.(like the gf's windows 7)

I got 3194 because mine was previously jailbroken and some software on my laptop (tinyumbrella) meant that when iOS5 was being verified, it wasn't actually speaking to apples servers, like it should have been.

3194 just means that the software can't be verified basically, but because 5.0 is the latest software, there should be no problem. My suggestion would be to replace your hosts file (file that tells iTunes where to go to verify the software).

Once downloaded you should place it in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

It will ask you if you're sure you want to overwrite the file, so just say yes.

Let me know what happens, I'll do a bit more research into it, but I am usually only helpful when it's a jailbreaking problem, since my own phone and 9/10 ones I work with are jailbroken..

Forgot to mention, I assume you're using the latest version of iTunes?

and yes i got 10.5 latest one,deleted it and redownloaded it.

just looked in that folder and i seem to have a host and a hosts.umbrella
