I got 14 out of 24. Of course if I had read some leaflet about it I would have been disappointed not to get 100%, but in all honesty, if the aim of this exercise is to determine whether I would as an immigrant be worthy of staying or not it is ridiculous. For example,:
9. Which of the following statements is true?
  1. The governing body of the EU is the Council of the European Union
  2. The governing body of the EU is the Council of Europe
I bet half the MP's would get that one wrong, and what difference does it make anyway?
Surely a written and verbal English test, and hard evidence of an emplyable skill or means of financial support are of far more use than this test?

Exactly.

It's a difficult situation. I'm sure they want to avoid something which a lot of people will fail and which could be considered culturally biased, but if you wanting people to fit in then isn't that sort of what is required?

I think they make you study this stuff because its noble and the foundations of many things. If they made you study contemporary foods, television and attitudes no one would bother coming over here ;)

I can imagine there was a committee set up to devise this test, and after many meetings and gallons of coffee they devised a test that made it look like they were doing something to appease certain quarters, but in truth most of the questions would be bland and have no bearing whatsoever on the key issue of integration and participation in the economy. If I were to decide to apply to live and then citizenship in a foreign country I would expect to start learning the language before I got there let alone afterwards, and to be asked to prove how I would support myself. Surely that is more important than knowing whether Prince Harry can marry a non-Protestant. All this test proves is if somebody has memorised some (mainly obscure and useless) facts from a book. Trivial Pursuit for immigrants.

I doubt that the main motivation to go to any country, let alone this one is food TV and popular attitudes!

Exactly. If it were something as useful as actually knowing about British culture then great, but I was crapping myself. Get one too many questions wrong and you're out of the country.

To be fair, there are thousands of Brits living in Spain, France, Cyprus etc who don't speak a word of the local language, only ever go to English Pubs and eat English food, that makes us pretty guilty of not integrating too

Exactly. Whilst I think integration is generally a good thing, you can't force people to do it but it is good for pretty much all concerned. I love the fact that I'm lucky enough to understand the language here and even luckier to be able to understand the culture and get the humour :)
