UK - New 80MPH speed limit

i think its a tactical ploy, to keep some car owners happy come election time. however i do worry about other driver that dont drive with due care and attention! pulling out from the middle lane doing 57 mph taking ten years to overtake a lorry which is in the first lane and not increasing their speed forcing the drivers behind to brake evasivly is going to cause more accidents behind and tail backs. i do think it is a good thing too as sometimes you need to get past ****e drivers quick

Exactly.

Bad driving, stupid driving, careless and reckless driving, dangerous driving are all far more worse than upping the speed limit by 10mph.

Driving tests should be FAR more stringent, then we'd see a massive reduction fatal RTAs.

its not just young drivers, its the older drivers who think they own the road that are problems as well

I will by a standard travel at what ever speed I feel is safe for the time and conditions, when not limited by the car (The Cento will say it can do 80. I'm not convinced. :D)

As a few have said tho the issue is not the speed its the other drivers, not looking before lane changes, not moving back into lane 1 or 2 when there is plainly enough space for it, I could list faults for hours you get the point. If everyone had the same level of training/understanding it would be a lot safer/better flowing regardless of speed limits.

Isn't it only a consultation at the moment anyway?
I think it should go ahead, but a few years ago, if they had raised the limit to 80, everybody would have been doing 85-90. But now with the price of fuel as high as it is, I am not so sure. People have realised how much that last 10 mph knocks your consumption in most vehicles.
From a safety angle - well Germany seem to manage fine with no limits on many stretches. However, I would like to see a commitment that a percentage of the extra fuel revenue raised should be spent only on extra traffic police (proper ones not those pretend police - generally fat blokes sitting in motorway services in Nissan 4x4's trying to look like police). We have way too many people driving on the motorways now who have clearly no idea what they are doing. And why should they? Motorway driving isn't part of the test.

tbf most people on the road speeding in big motors are company cars, sales reps, these guys i feel should have there speed ltd. some great and valid points. lory drivers are no better either holding lanes up and blocking the flow of traffic.

also i'm not gonna single out women, lol but they have there seat set far too forward, so far forward infact that its very hard for them to see out their mirrors.

has anyone actually tried leaning so far forward that there face is in line with the steering wheel? it actually feels like your doing a 100 when in fact your only doing 55 60

That is absolutely my pet hate! They have to lean back to see through the mirror! Why do their instructors allow them to learn like that? I am sure an air bag would knock their teeth out!

from some where to some where ( may not have been in the uk) when i set off sat nav said i would arrive at destination in 3 hours i did up to 20 mph more than what would be legal in the uk and only arrived 10 minutes before the time sat nav said when i first set off, so an 80 mph speed limit isn't going to help anyone get ang where faster, banning lorries from over taking on 2 lane roads will as it can slow normal 70 mph traffic down to 0 in peak times

You should always keep some in reserve for emergency situations where it's safe to to get past that lorry swaying into your lane rather than anchor up. TBH I usually sit at about 60 with the lorries, or if I'm in a rush and the sat navs on I'll occassionaly go according to that which is does prove about 10% error in the speedo, so 78 is actually 70 according to sat nav. But I very rarely have it on.

i see more men and women with seat too far back, so their bonnet is fully over the line at a junction before they can see what is coming

true say mate, tell you the truth mate i can never see the end of my bonnet in any of my cars no matter how big or how small, i like a low seating position so i can feel what going on underneath me.

however i consider myself to be a decent driver and know the dimensions of my cars. and always watch my mirrors.

the speedo in accuracy is also a **** take, when you speedo is showing 30 and your doing 25 26 is going to cheese alot of people off behind. i'm the first to take action and overtake. if the limit is 30 then people should drive to the speed if you cant u shouldnt be on the road.

would be hard to ban lorries to come in to the middle lane tbh as it is so difficult to build up speed once they have braked. also have you ever been behind a person for so long that you become fixated?

these people that brake every 3 seconds just because they ahve gone 0.0000001 mph over the speed limit need shooting, cant they just lift off the accelerator??

i think driving instructors need to teach a lot more than clutch control, braking and manouvers

I'm all for the higher speed limit, and not just because it would mean that I then couldn't be caught Speeding on the motorways:p

That's nothing to do with how far back the seat is, my car has the seat about 7ft behind the front of the car and i don't sit with the bonnet over the line, It's just poor driving.

Personally quite like the idea of the 80mph limit. would allow greater flexibility for driving especially if you aim to drive around 70 as before.

In practice i predict it to be a nightmare.... i hope i'm wrong.

3 lane roads it will be fine, i meant on 2 lane roads. some places its already in place like a bit of the A14 and its helped a lot
